a great vist yeterday to the official opening of a celtic Roundhouse at Plas Power Education Centre. It was worrying at first to see genuine Celts inside the roundhouse their cloths were basic but the blue woad gave them an interesting look. It was a project undertaken by Groundwork.

Groundwork North Wales supports communities in need, working with partners to help improve the quality of people’s lives, their prospects and potential and the places where they live, work and play.
They do this by developing and running hundreds of practical projects ranging from environmental education for schools and community groups, walking, cycling and gardening schemes for local communities through to designing and landscaping a local school play ground or community garden, plus many more.

Stereophonics and Feeder play Grand Slam Party.
Stereophonics and Feeder are just two of the big name acts set to rock the Millennium Stadium for a star-studded free party to celebrate Wales's 2008 RBS Six Nations Grand Slam next Bank Holiday Monday (26 May) from 2.00 pm.
Supporters have the chance to give Warren Gatland and his unbeaten squad a well deserved "thank you" for bringing the most sought after prize in European rugby home to Wales in style last March.
The star-studded bash also features performances by the Welsh X-Factor star Rhydian Roberts and world renowned singer Heather Small and, with a top celebrity host and other Welsh stars like Katherine Jenkins appearing at the event via big screen video messages, Wales latest rugby heroes will be given a day to remember.
Entry will be free, so that as many people as possible can join the fun and salute the 2008 Grand Slammers just days before they embark on their two-Test summer tour to the home of World Champions South Africa.
All members of the victorious squad will be there in person and the show will feature interviews with the men who matter like Gatland, captain Ryan Jones and RBS Six Nations Player of the Tournament Shane Williams played out live on specially erected big screens as the Millennium Stadium converts to theatre mode with its unique Arena curtain fully operational.

Coedpoeth United.
What football teams and set up. But so many teams for boys and girls. Such an asset to the village. So privileged and proud to be allowed to present the awards on Friday night. The club is so successful that they have to split their awards evenings into two, in order to accommadate the huge numbers of parents and friends interested. The time and commitment from so many parents relatives and friends of the players is outstanding.
I have been told that having presented the awards to the younger sportspersons. "If we can't get anybody decent will you do it again?".
Of course I will, but what a fantastic put down. Puts you in your place. Take that Griffiths!

Communities affected by last summer's floods across England are to get much less compensation from the European Union than originally thought.
In March, the European Parliament voted to give the United Kingdom about £110m from the European Union's Solidarity Fund - a pot of money set aside for member states to apply for if hit by a natural disaster.
But it has now been confirmed the payout will only be £31m.
So why is the cheque being written only for around a quarter of the amount originally announced?
It was in 1984 under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the UK agreed a so-called "abatement mechanism" with the EU - what is commonly known as the rebate.
Even today many people are still paying the price of her policies.

Hurt" is a song written by Trent Reznor, first released on Nine Inch Nails's 1994 album The Downward Spiral. In 2002, "Hurt" was covered by Johnny Cash to critical acclaim; it was one of Cash's final hit releases before his death. Its accompanying video, featuring images from Cash's life and directed by Mark Romanek, was named the best video of the year by the Grammy Awards and Country Music Awards. Try and look at it as I think it has real quality.
It does unfortunately relate to heroin abuse. This is becoming a bigger issue as our young people find it a difficult world and perhaps look for the wrong answers to their problems.

So then Wrexham out of the league. Huge disappointment. Finish off by scoring 4 goals away from home and an away win. Hopefully straight back up, but you never know.
Any soccer fan should watch the 80? yard goal by non-league Montgomery Town goalkeeper Steve Goodwin
It must be one of the "greatest and most spectacular goals" or a fluke, in British football history. It is well worth a look. Google or youtube and you will find it.
BBC Wales have it on their web site but it will soon go.
In a bad week it cheered me up no end.

Liu Suozhu, 48, of Henan province, completed the 750ft journey over Miluo River in Pingjiang city, Hunan province. Liu, who is nicknamed the Car King in China, drove the motor from a platform in front of thousands of cheering spectators.
During his 30-minute journey, Liu communicated with the performance host via radio, which was broadcast to the audience.
"The cables are a bit shaky, not very stable... the slope is very steep," the showman said, to more cheers from the crowd.
Liu says the last few minutes were the most difficult and dangerous because the steep slope blocked his rear view. He stopped several times during the last section of his journey.
He now faces the ultimate test; to travel accross Wrexham at rush hour in under his 30minute record time. Don't fancy his chances myself.

Well wasted 2 hours of campaigning time in the casualty department of Wrexham Maelor Hospital. The dog I suppose was doing what guard dogs are supposed to do although a growl or a bark would have been preferable to the full on bite.
It did remind me obviously about how good the Health Service is these days. I was seen quite quickly by well trained staff. The stitches, Tetanus booster jab and the antibiotics were of course provided without any charge. Front line services are being delivered and I would thank the staff for their efforts. Feel free to have a giggle if you want I am trying to see the funny side.
Unfortunately it is my typing finger so shorter blogs for a week or so.

Go onto youtube and search for the video. Utah Saints Something good. Great song long been a favourite of mine but now with a welsh angle to it. Off one of my favourite albums/C.D.s I loved it. Guest vocal/sample by the wonderful Kate Bush. Try and view the one from mattwilliams. It features the 'running man'.
I am struggling to walk after 5,00 leaflets !!!! I certainly couldn't dance like this man.

Wrexham service to London starts.

A direct train service linking Wrexham with London begins running on Monday after a 41-year gap. Services will be operated five times a day in both directions between the town and London Marylebone by the Wrexham and Shropshire train company.
Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones is catching the 0725 BST service.
He will also open a rail depot built to provide overnight accommodation for the trains and office space as well as house catering supplies.
The route will also re-establish a direct link between Shropshire and London which was lost in 2004. The company is using hired carriages and engines until its own dedicated fleet of trains is ready to begin running in the summer.
After decades of cuts dating back to the bad old days of the Beeching axe, our country is using its growing devolved powers to fight back.The new trains will offer charging points for laptops and mobiles as well as free Wi-fi access.
Andy Hamilton, managing director of Wrexham and Shropshire, said: "Wrexham has not had a frequent, direct rail service to London since 1967 so this is a proud day for the rail industry and for the town.
The service is direct and is competitively priced.

My thanks to BBC Wales for this fascinating article on my favourite part of Wales.
Work on the Snowdon summit building is being hampered by snow, says the Snowdonia National Park Authority.
Workers on the project have had to dig snow off the railway track just to get to work every day.The contractors have had to concentrate instead on work inside the building because of the harsh conditions at the summit.
A spokeswoman for Snowdonia National Park said there was still three months work to complete the £8.35m building.
"Due to the amount of snow that has fallen on the summit within the last few weeks, attempts by workers to reach the summit have been hampered," said the park authority's Llinos Angharad.
"When they do succeed in reaching the summit, conditions continue to be difficult for them to complete the stonework on the outside of the building as the snow, ice, rain, must and the general dampness in the air makes it difficult for workers to work with the stone," she added.
Despite the weather problems, she said there was not a problem with completing the building, which is called Hafod Eryri, before the autumn deadline to draw on funds from Europe.
The Assembly Government has supported the project and backing has also come from European Objective One funds. A public appeal also raised £350,000.
"The authority is immensely grateful for the dedicated and determined efforts the workers are making to complete the building.
"The weather conditions are atrocious for them, but they persist in their efforts on our behalf," Ms Angharad added.
The centre will have facilities giving visitors the chance to learn more about Wales' highest mountain and its environment.
It will also provide weather information, advice on routes as well as refreshments and shelter.
The building's name was chosen after a secret ballot. Hafod Eryri. Eryri in English is Snowdonia but there is no translation for Hafod, an old Welsh term for residence on high land.
It is a beautiful but dangerous place if you go unprepared.

They thought it was all over - but it's not quite the end for Wrexham AFC as a football league club yet.
So Hereford on Tuesday night.
The club threw themselves a last-gasp lifeline in their struggle to stay in the Football League with a 1-0 win over Notts County at the Racecourse. Can they do it again. I really hope so but it is a tall order.
Many of the 3,000-plus fans had expected to see them drop out of the league for the first time in 87 years.
But a second-half goal saw unexpected celebrations - and some even wonder if they could perform the great escape for the second season in a row.

First Minister opens £35m engineering centre of excellence

Providing cutting edge skills for the engineers and construction workers of the future is a cornerstone of the Assembly Government's plans to build a strong economy, Labour's First Minister of Wales Rhodri Morgan said in Wrexham today.
He was in Wrexham to officially open the new £35.2 million Engineering and Construction Centre at Yale Tertiary College, with half of the funding for the project coming from the Assembly Government.
Rhodri Morgan said: "Excellent training facilities such as these provide a firm foundation for the future. I'm delighted to open this latest addition to Yale College's impressive facilities that will be used to train students of all ages.Supporting skills academies in key manufacturing sectors is a commitment in the Assembly Government's One Wales programme. Yale College received financial support from the Assembly Government with the aim of improving learning facilities in identified priority areas."The First Minister highlighted the close links the College had forged with more than 200 local employers, showing the benefits of collaboration:"They range from micro enterprises to large companies such as JCB, Scottish Power and Airbus. The College is making an important contribution to Airbus development at Broughton by providing quality assurance training for all staff."
The 14-19 Learning Pathways programme is at the heart of the Assembly Government's strategy to provide the best possible opportunities for young people, and Yale College is a lead partner in the scheme. The First Minister said: "The work carried out at Yale exemplifies the sort of collaboration that is needed to ensure our young people fulfil their potential and contribute to the ongoing economic growth of Wales."

Rugby daffodil blooming for show

Garden lovers have had their first official view of a daffodil dedicated to Welsh rugby as the RHS spring show opened in Cardiff.
It is the fourth year running the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has chosen the city to host the event.
It will be the first time the new "Welsh Rugby Daffodil" is displayed by the RHS.
It has taken 15 years to develop the daffodil breed, and has been named 'Undeb Rygbi Cymru' by the RHS.
The flower has been bred by gold medal winning grower Ron Scamp, from Cornwall, and was selected by the RHS to present to the Welsh Rugby Union.
The RHS show director, Stephen Bennett said: "Ron Scamp is one of the world's leading daffodil growers and the 'Welsh Rugby Union' daffodil is a sturdy, stunning specimen with lots of stamina, just perfect for the phenomenal Welsh rugby team.

Wasn't like this when I played for Wrexham R.F.C. Just had a segment of orange at half time. Very sad to hear of the death of George Lee (wingnut) as he was known to many of his friends at Wrexham Rugby Club. I only have fond and funny memories of him. He was a lovely man. A gentleman.

Meeting the Climate Change Challenge - in Welsh
Labour's Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing, Jane Davidson, today outlined the challenge facing Wales in combating climate change to
the first ever Welsh-language conference on the subject.
The two-day conference features a host of Welsh-language speakers, and aims to share information, discuss and propose actions on climate change.
Ms Davidson said climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing the world today and everyone in Wales has a role to play. Ms Davidson said communication would be a vital tool in ensuring everyone in Wales was on-board with the challenge of climate change: "On that basis we will be launchinga new communication campaign in June, including a bi-lingual Carbon Calculator which will be able to give people a detailed action plan on reducing their carbon footprint through the medium of Welsh"
The Welsh Language Working Group for the Environmental Sector was established at the beginning of 2007 by various organisations operating in the environmental sphere in Wales, and its aim is to develop "a strong partnership between environmental organisations and other partners in order to promote and develop the use of Welsh in a strategic and co-ordinated way within the environmental sector in Wales".
WHY NOT.
So the Sicilian town of Castelbuono has replaced four of its garbage trucks with donkeys and claims to be saving money as well as helping to combat global warming. Interesting. Perhaps Chief Constable Brunstron could find a use for his horses?

The last two weeks have certainly proved to be interesting for Sea Shepherd as they continue to oppose the Canadian seal slaughter. In two weeks, they have been rammed twice by a Coast Guard ship, kept under survellience by a Coast Guard plane, and assaulted by a mob of angry fishermen in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon. Apparently, the Canadian government and the sealers do not want us to expose this slaughter for what it is: the largest marine mammal slaughter in the world. Sea Shepherd documents the seal slaughter
After traveling north from Bermuda through stormy seas, Sea Shepherd's ship Farley Mowat arrived at Canada's eastern ice floes to witness and document the horrendous seal slaughter despite opposition from the Canadian government.
Canadian Coast Guard rams the Farley Mowat
On March 30, 2008 the Canadian Coast Guard ship Des Groseilliers twice rammed the Farley Mowat while it was documenting the seal slaughter.
The Coast Guard has demonstrated extreme recklessness with this move. The crew of the Farley Mowat were engaged in documenting the slaughter of seals. They were not interfering with the hunt.
Farley Mowat attacked by mob in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon
Sea Shepherd's ship, the Farley Mowat, was attacked on April 4th by a mob of 30-40 angry fishermen. The attack took place while berthed in the French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon. The Farley Mowat was berthed in St. Pierre to transfer video footage of the Canadian seal slaughter onto shore and await the resumption of the slaughter, which was temporarily suspended after the death of four sealers.
The mob proceeded to harass the ship, attacking one crewmember who made it back on board safely before the mob threw the gangplank into the water and cut the ship's mooring lines with an axe while police stood by watching.
Canada has started killing 325,000 seals without any moral or scientific justification. However, the seals will not suffer in silence, they will not be wiped out in a vacuum of apathy. They will be heard even if we have to outrage an entire nation by insisting on documenting the slaughter and showing the world what is happening to the seals in Canada.

What a sad sad day for Coedpoeth.

So the British Nazi Party have got one their members elected (unopposed) on to Coedpoeth Community Council. I truely hope that the other members of the Community Council ensure that the total misinformation and hatred of these persons is not reflected in the way that Coedpoeth is viewed.
Coedpoeth has a history of tolerance and understanding second to none. Many people of this village and surrounding areas gave their lives to protect us from the people that have such bigoted views. I do not believe that Coedpoeth is a Nazi village. Opportunists have seen a gap and slithered in.
It was a priviledge to be on the march through Wrexham today where a huge gathering showed their objection to the bnp with a peaceful protest. Sadly the half dozen or so of the bnp tried to spoil a peaceful protest with their foul mouths. But you would expect nothing better of this shower.
It was very encouraging to see elected members of all the proper parties attending to put aside political differences to expose the lies of the bnp.

Facts & figures
Although domestic violence is chronically under reported, research estimates it:

Whatever form it takes, domestic violence is rarely a one-off incident. More usually it's a pattern of abusive and controlling behaviour through which the abuser seeks power over their victim.
Domestic violence occurs across society, regardless of age, gender, race, sexuality, wealth and geography. The figures show, however, that it consists mainly of violence by men against women.
Victims of domestic violence suffer on many levels - health, housing, education - and lose the freedom to live their lives how they want, and without fear.
Doesn't make nice reading does it.

The slaughter of the baby seals has been suspended for a week.The sealers of the Quebec’s Magdalen Islands have returned home to bury three of the four sealers killed by Canadian Coast Guard incompetence. The fourth is still missing and is presumed dead. I can't comment but if they were not there??????????Some of the Magdalen Island sealers will not be returning. According to the Canadian media: Wayne Dickson hasn't caught his quota of seals this season. But the 53-year-old says he no longer has the will to hunt after watching his friend's sealing vessel capsize while being towed by a Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker in the Gulf of St. Lawrence on the weekend. Dickson and his six-member crew managed to rescue two fishermen, but three other sealers drowned and a fourth is still missing after the damaged L'Acadien II fishing vessel overturned while being dragged over a large chunk of ice, about 70 kilometres north of Cape Breton Island. "I just don't have the heart for it - I don't think many of the guys are going back out," Dickson said Tuesday. "It is just too devastating."
Yeh I am sure many seals felt the same about their friends.

Canadian Minister of Fisheries and Oceans has accused anti-slaughter organizations of exploiting the tragedy to underscore how unsafe sealing is, citing that the sealers are well aware of how dangerous their occupation is.
“We did not kill these men,” said Captain Paul Watson. “Canadian government incompetence and the political ambitions of Loyola Hearn killed them. Hearn allows hundreds of undersize, wooden and aluminum vessels into treacherous ice conditions and does not provide adequate Coast Guard protections and training. Those men died because they were in conditions they should not have been in and the Canadian government put them in that position.”
Canadian Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn is attempting to discredit the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society with contradictory accusations. First he accuses Sea Shepherd of being a wealthy organization and then describes the Sea Shepherd ship Farley Mowat as an unsafe “decrepit rust bucket.”
The Farley Mowat is an ice class steel hulled 60 meter ship that has years of experience navigating ice conditions both in the Arctic and the Antarctic yet according to the Minister it is unsafe for our ship to be in the ice yet it is okay to send 12 meter fragile vessels into the same ice.
In the last week, two sealing boats have sunk, numerous sealing boats have broken down, the government failed to rescue the crew of the boat they were towing after their tow capsized the vessel and then they twice rammed the Farley Mowat with a large ice-breaker.
The crew of the Farley Mowat also observed the ice-breaker running down and crushing seal pups on the ice and they observed absolutely no enforcement of the humane regulations with regard to killing the seals.

“We’ve seen seals suffering in agony on the ice. We’ve seen enough to know that Canada’s claim that the seal hunt is humane has no credibility” said Farley Mowat communications officer Shannon Mann 35 from Alberta.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society recognizes that the deaths of four sealers is a tragedy but Sea Shepherd also recognizes that the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of seal pups is an even greater tragedy.

“One of the sealers was quoted as saying that he felt absolutely helpless as he watched the boat sink with sealers onboard,” said Captain Paul Watson. “I can’t think of anything that defines helplessness and fear more than a seal pup on the ice that can’t swim or escape as it is approached by some cigarette smoking ape with a club. This is a seal nursery and these men are sadistic baby killers and that might offend some people but it is the unvarnished truth – they are vicious killers who are now pleading for sympathy because some of their own died while engaged in a viciously brutal activity.”

The Farley Mowat is berthing in the French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon until the slaughter resumes next week. The crew intends to get the video off the ship of the Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker twice ramming the Farley Mowat. The Canadian Minister of Fisheries and Oceans has accused Sea Shepherd of lying about the ramming. First he claimed that the Coast Guard did not ram the Sea Shepherd vessel, then he claimed that the Coast Guard only “grazed” the Farley Mowat and then he said that it was the Farley Mowat that hit the Coast Guard icebreaker. The video will be able to confirm the Sea Shepherd story. The Canadian Coast Guard has not released any video and is not expected to.

Attempts to retrieve the video by helicopter failed when the Canadian Department of Transport grounded the helicopter from HSUS that was going to pick up the video.
The Sea Shepherd ship Farley Mowat is in the middle of very hostile territory, in the middle of dangerous ice conditions, unable to rely on the Canadian Coast Guard for assistance, under attack by that same Coast Guard, threatened by powerful Canadian politicians, threatened with physical assault from armed and angry seal killers.

It is amazing when compassion for life is dismissed as radical and those who slaughter the innocent are given the full support of the government and the Minister of Fisheries. Council housing transfer agreed
Council house tenants in Merthyr Tydfil have voted to transfer their homes to a not-for-profit housing association, Community Housing Cymru said.
£69.5m will be spent improving homes in the area over the next five years, the housing association body said.
The result was 1,199 in favour of transferring to Merthyr Valleys Homes with 1,185 against. It doesn't get much closer than that.
Is it the right decision? I probably thing so.
What a shame that the tenants of Wrexham were so misled by John Marek who was deeply involved in the Vote No campaign that spread so much misinformation.

Turnout for the vote was 57%, with 2,390 votes cast by post, phone, text and on the internet.

David Cameron may be fond of his bike but what will be its impact on his political credibility? Words of Clive James journalist.
I'm glad I've had a whole week to consider the questions raised by an inspired tabloid sting that caught Conservative Leader David Cameron, on his way to work, cycling the wrong way up a one way street as well as ignoring at least one red light.
Personal morality versus official responsibility, credibility versus hypocrisy, physical fulfilment versus the duty to reduce carbon emissions: all these things were in play from the moment that the redtop reporter got on his bike and started trailing Mr Cameron in the direction of Westminster, with the impending-chase music from Bullitt playing ominously on the soundtrack.
For the reporter, it was no easy job. He had a video camera, so he had to ride one-handed. He had to follow Mr Cameron through a red light and along a one way street, going the wrong way.
At any moment Mr Cameron might have stood on the pedals, calves globular, and streaked out of sight like a sprinter in the last hundred metres of the Tour de France.
The reporter also had to be careful not to get run over by the car that might be following Mr Cameron on these cycling expeditions because there is no provision on the leader of the opposition's bicycle for his briefcase, official boxes, sandwiches and, apparently, shoes.
Tory Central Office insists that no such car has followed the cycling Mr Cameron for some time now,????????????????????
It's the flagrant flouting of the rules of the road that has got Mr Cameron into trouble. His apologies have been touching, if not entirely convincing.

"I have obviously made mistakes on this occasion and I am sorry." Notice how he leaves the way open for the inference that there might have been countless other occasions on which he has not made mistakes.
Obviously he realises he has bared his flank to suggestions that his present behaviour on the road when in charge of a bicycle might throw doubts on his future behaviour in 10 Downing street when in charge of the country.

Health Minister gives go-ahead for new mental health unit.
Two new mental health units at Wrexham Maelor Hospital have today given the green light by Assembly Health Minister Edwina Hart.
The re-development ofthe current mental health unit - Llwyn y Groes - will provide a 44-bed unit on the Wrexham Maelor site, creating a more therapeutic environment for patients in North East Wales.
Linked to this site will be a new 28 bedded elderly mental health unit which will provide modern, state-of-the-art services such as an activity centre, including therapeutic and activity areas and accommodation supporting hospital memory services and liaison services The linking of the units will create an integrated facility with shared physical infrastructure and allow clinical cross over.
The Welsh Assembly Government will be providing funding for the two developments and the units are expected to be up and running by Spring 2010.
Edwina Hart said: "With an increasingly ageing population in Wales, improvements in mental health services are key to providing better care for the future, as we pledged in our One Wales commitments. The development of elderly mental health services has been identified as a priority by the Trust and, together with the improvements in community services being delivered, will mean better quality of care for patients in north east.

THE Welsh Conservatives say they will launch their own review into free prescriptions if the Assembly Government refuses to do the same.
The party issued the ultimatum as figures revealed the number of prescriptions issued in Wales had risen by 5% since the charges were scrapped.
There have been widespread fears that the flagship Labour policy, which was launched in 2007, is being abused by patients.
It has been previously reported that common over-the-counter remedies, including Bonjela and Vaseline, vitamins and 1p-a-pill painkillers are being handed out on free prescriptions in Wales.
But the Assembly Government has defended the policy, saying it is part of a “long-term investment in managing chronic conditions”.
The Conservative ultimatum, issued just before the first anniversary of free prescriptions in Wales, comes as official figures revealed that 62.1 million prescriptions were dispensed in 2007, compared to 58.9m in 2006, when the prescription fee stood at £3 per item.
Jonathan Morgan, the Shadow Health Minister, said, “I accept that the number of prescriptions dispensed has risen in recent years. However, it is clear from these figures that the policy of free prescriptions is impacting on the number of items dispensed by pharmacists.
“Welsh Conservatives warned last April that the cost of scrapping prescription charges would rise year-on-year.
“Since then we have seen how money which should have been spent on treating chronically ill patients and providing access to modern medicines has been wasted on prescriptions for the likes of Bonjela and athlete’s foot powder.
“The Assembly Government must now explain how much this policy is now costing – and what it is expected to cost in future years.
“Ministers must review this policy before the 2011 Assembly elections to ensure it is being delivered effectively.
“If the Assembly Government is not willing to hold a review, then we will hold our own.”
It is dificult to find a body of people less relevant to Wales than this shower. If they were not intent on spoiling Wales I would feel sorry for them. Poor things.
Prescription charges were scrapped in Wales in April 2007 – at the same time as they rose to £6.85 per item in England.
But although patients no longer pay for their medicines, the system still costs the health service money to dispense each item. Each prescription item processed by a pharmacist costs in the region of 90p to £1 to the NHS.
The Assembly Government said the number of prescriptions dispensed has been rising steadily for several years because of factors such as an ageing population.
The NHS was reimbursed with £29.5m in 2007-08 to meet the estimated cost of introducing the policy.
Dr Tony Jewell, Chief Medical Officer for Wales, said, “GPs are responsible for ensuring that medication is prescribed based on the patient’s clinical needs to avoid the risk of people trying to abuse free prescriptions.
“We have stressed that patients needing over-the counter medicines should continue to buy them in the normal way.
“We see free prescriptions as a long-term investment in managing chronic conditions and improving health, which will ultimately reduce the cost and pressure on the NHS from the likes of emergency admissions.
“It also ensures people were not put off getting the medicines they need due to cost. If people don’t take regular prescription medicines they may find their health gets worse.
“We place great emphasis on the importance of prevention of illness in Wales and the effective management of conditions, especially chronic conditions, which are prevalent in Wales.
“We are monitoring the impact on prescribing as a matter of routine to ensure it is being delivered effectively.”
And Cat Shorney, asthma services development officer for Wales at Asthma UK Cymru, said, “When free prescriptions came in almost a year ago in Wales this was an important victory for people with asthma.
“This vital change in policy has meant that the 260,000 people in Wales who suffer from asthma now receive fair and equal access to the medication they need.
“Now that free prescriptions are available in Wales, people with asthma no longer need to worry about affording their medicines and are therefore better able to manage their condition.
The message is clear. Unless you have lots of money then don't be ill and don't vote conservative or you will be stuffed by them.

Sea Shepherd Moves North to Protect Seals
Many of the crew of the Farley Mowat did not have much time to rest before flying from Australia to Bermuda to join other Sea Shepherd volunteers onboard the Sea Shepherd ship Farley Mowat.
From Icebergs at the bottom of the world to ice floes in the far north, Sea Shepherd crew cannot be accused of fair weather campaigning.
"I haven't seen summer in a long long time," said Amber Paarman 24 from South Africa.
The Farley Mowat with a crew of 19 departed from Dockland in Bermuda at 1700 Hours on March 24th, bound north for the Gulf of St. Lawrence to enter the ice field nurseries where Canada intends to slaughter 325,000 seal pups.
It will only take a few days for the ship to reach the Cabot Strait. Canada has warned the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to not enter Canadian waters. However the ship has the right of passage through waters outside of the 12 mile limit. The ship will not be entering within the 12 mile limit. Most of the seals are slaughtered outside of 12 miles.
Crewmembers have joined the ship from Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Canada, France, Great Britain, Sweden, Ecuador and the Netherlands.
The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has opposed the slaughter of seals since 1977 and has sent a ship into the ice to protect seals in 1979, 1981, 1983, 1998 and 2005. The Society sent crew to the ice in other years by helicopter and has been steadfast in its opposition for over three decades. The slaughter was shut down in 1984 until 1994 and then resumed in 1995.

Crisps, chocolate and sugary drinks are to be removed from vending machines in NHS hospitals in Wales.
Health Minister Edwina Hart says Wales is the first part of the UK to commit to such move to tackle obesity and diet-related disease.
It is part of the Labour-Plaid Cymru assembly government's commitment in the deal which created their coalition to improve hospital food and nutrition.
Most junk food will be removed from the machines in the next six months.
Only one NHS hospital in Wales out of 130 will not have healthy vending in place by 2010.
Almost 20% of six to 13-year-olds in Wales are overweight or obese - the highest rate in the UK - as are six out of every 10 men, and half of women.
The assembly government believes hospitals in particular should show best practice in providing health options.
The assembly government said it would liaise with vending machine providers to find ways of introducing healthier food and drink.
We need to create an environment where it is easier for people to make healthy choices.
Health Minister Edwina Hart
Guidance will be issued to support the change, providing clear definitions of what will be allowed in the machines.
Ms Hart said: "Diet has an important role to play in the prevention of obesity and chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers.
"The assembly government is committed to improving the health of the population of Wales and reducing inequalities by tackling the underlying causes of ill health."
"We need to create an environment where it is easier for people to make healthy choices and our public sector settings should be an exemplar of best practice, particularly our hospitals.
"This is the first stage of the work to improve hospital food," Ms Hart added.
Paediatric departments.
"We will be speaking with WRVS (Women's Royal Voluntary Service) and other outlets in hospitals about further ways they can support the broader over-arching agenda to improve nutrition in hospitals."
A study carried out by Cardiff's University Hospital of Wales which looked at vending machines in or near paediatric departments in Welsh hospitals showed very few NHS trusts had any machines where half of more of the drinks were healthy.
Huw Jenkins, consultant paediatric gastroenterologist at the hospital, said: "It is clear from a recent survey that the majority of vending machines around children's areas in Welsh hospitals do not provide enough healthy options.He said the minister's announcement would ensure "all vending machines are stocked with healthy options in the future".
The vending machine ban follows a report from a group set up last year and chaired by the chief nursing officer for Wales, to improve patients' food and drink.
Similar work is being undertaken on vending both in schools and in leisure centres.
It also follows an announcement earlier this month of plans to improve oral health by giving children as young as three free toothbrushes, as well as lessons in how to use them.
Makes sense to me or should we have freedom of choice???

Displaying cigarettes in shops could be banned in England under government plans being considered to cut smoking and discourage children from starting.Ministers are also considering tougher controls on vending machines in pubs and restaurants.
A public consultation due to start within months will call for the public's opinion.
But the Association of Convenience Stores said the move would be ineffective and present major problems.
'Smoking is bad'
The association said forcing shops to hide their cigarettes would create practical difficulties and result in extra expense for shop owners.
But Public Health Minister Dawn Primarolo said it was "vital" to teach children that "smoking is bad".
"If that means stripping out vending machines or removing cigarettes from behind the counter, I'm willing to do that," she said.
Ms Primarolo stressed: "Children who smoke are putting their lives at risk and are more likely to die of cancer than people who start smoking later."

Young smokers

The measures could effectively force the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products under the counter in convenience shops and supermarkets.
Measures that make it easier to sell nicotine replacement gums and patches are also under consideration.
The Department of Health, which is keen to prevent youngsters from smoking, has cited research that suggests someone who starts smoking at the age of 15 is three times more likely to die of smoking-related cancer than someone who starts in their late 20s.
The proposed measures come after this year's Budget in which Chancellor Alistair Darling increased the duty on tobacco, adding 11p to the price of a packet of 20 cigarettes and 4p to the price of five cigars.
The chancellor also said the government was continuing the 5% reduced rate of VAT on smoking cessation products beyond 30 June.
A ban on smoking in public places and workplaces in England came into force last July.
As an ex smoker and yes we are the worst wingers about smoking I would like to know if the Welsh Assembly Government will follow suit. it seems to be a good idea. I hope that Edwina Hart will make a statement on this issue.
Bans were introduced in Scotland in 2006, and in Wales and Northern Ireland in 2007.

As George Bush proclaims that his Iraq adventure has made the world a safer place you almost have to admire him for keeping a straight face. If it weren't for the blood of hundreds of thousands of mothers, fathers and children on the President's hands, it would be laughable. With lies about WMDs and 45-minute threats, Bush betrayed us from the beginning. Their Iraq invasion tore up international law, shamed America with torture dungeons, tied the US and UK down while emboldening undemocratic regimes, created a million refugees, handed Osama bin Laden a recruitment service and training ground, and helped ruin the US economy and bring on a world recession.
His only excuse. He is mentally feeble, gullible and out of misplaced loyalty to his father made a huge mistake. But what of his advisers? They can tie their own shoelaces but they went along with Bush seniors plan because I believe he was behind the whole thing. He used his simpleton son to get his revenge.
Iraq's long long-term future? Civil war, not to mention a generation raised on blood and ready to head west for payback.

Welsh Eco-Schools go to the top of the class.
Jane Davidson, Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing, has congratulated pupils and staff at Eco-Schools across Wales for their hard work in winning awards at the Eco-Schools National Awards ceremony in the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on 18 March 2008.
At a ceremony in the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, fifteen schools were recognised as "top of the class" as they were presented with awards by the Minister and popular BBC Wales weatherman Derek Brockway. The Eco-School programme plays a vital role in helping young people make a major contribution on tackling climate change.
Minister Jane Davidson said: "The growth in Eco-Schools has been remarkable. The green shoots of the scheme started in 1995, with 10 pilot schools. From there the scheme has blossomed and now there are over 1,600 Eco-Schools, almost 90% of all Welsh schools."
The scheme addresses some of our most pressing concerns: Climate change, Healthy living, The health of our natural environment and wildlife and Sustainable lifestyles.
The Eco-Schools Programme encourages pupils to engage with environmental and sustainable development issues. It provides a highly structured system for the environmental management of schools. Welsh rugby fans are to be offered another chance to celebrate their team's Grand Slam triumph. Welsh Rugby Union and assembly government chiefs are examining how to mark Wales' "wonderful victory".

No details have been released, but the last time Wales won the Grand Slam in 2005 Cardiff's Millennium Stadium hosted a bank holiday party.
The Welsh Assembly Government said: "There have been discussions on this and it has already been agreed that the Welsh Rugby Union and Welsh Assembly Government would look at ways of marking this wonderful victory."

Meanwhile, Shane Williams's record-breaking try in Saturday's game won his father a reported £25,000 bet.

In 2005 some 20,000 fans were joined by the team and the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall in the stadium.There had been earlier discussion of an open-tour bus tour in 2005, but in the event the party was the preferred option.

Well safely back from Cardiff having seen Wales win a second Grand Slam in Three years. Who would have thought that at the start of the campaign following a poor Rugby World Cup performance.

Thousands of rugby fans are celebrating Wales' Grand Slam 29-12 victory against France in Cardiff. Describing the performance as "unbelieveable", Welsh rugby legend Jonathan Davies paid tribute to Shane Williams who claimed the Welsh try-scoring record with his sixth of the tournament during the game.

Wales coach Gatland says his players can make their mark on that tour if they continue to improve at the same rate."I honestly believe that this team over the next 12 months to two years will become a very good side, that will be difficult to beat and won't be afraid to play anyone. We've made a lot of progress in the last seven weeks," he said."These players have given more than we, as coaches, have asked of them and if they do that then that's all you can ask for really.

Captain Ryan Jones hailed another superb defensive display after Wales claimed their second Grand Slam in four years with a 29-12 victory over France.
Warren Gatland's side conceded just two tries in their five games, scoring 13. "I've talked all along about people having dreams and what more can I take away from this," Jones told BBC Sport. "It's absolutely amazing. We've defended superbly and that's what's won us this championship. It's just been a magnificent eight weeks."

The results of the Living in Wales Survey - which is thought to be the first of its kind in the UK - were made public for the first time today (Wednesday 5th March). 7,500 households in Wales were questioned face-to-face about their experiences of: Social Services, Housing Services, GP Surgeries, Hospital Services, Bus Services, Early Years Education, Primary Schools, Secondary Schools, Recycling Facilities and Sport Facilities. Key findings include:
* Around 94% of service users felt that they were 'treated with dignity and respect' and that 'staff were helpful' when they used hospitals;
* Around 90% thought 'staff were helpful' and that they were treated with 'dignity and respect' at GP surgeries in Wales.
* around 80% of carers found it fairly or very easy to contact their social services department;
* A total of 80% were positive about their experience of bus services.
* Overall, 93% of parents were very or fairly satisfied with their child's early years education.
* 93% of parents also reported that they were to be very or fairly satisfied with primary school education overall.
* Overall, 86% of service users reported that they were very or fairly satisfied with recycling facilities.
Andrew Davies, Minister for Finance & Public Service Delivery, said: "Research such as this is essential if we are to put the citizen at the centre of our public services. It shows we are a listening government. The overwhelming picture from this study is one of satisfaction, with citizen's experiences being positive. For example, on the whole those who took part said good things about the way in which they are treated by staff working in public
services."

For nearly a full week, Sea Shepherd's ship the Steve Irwin has kept the Japanese whaling fleet on the run. Having previously planted tracking devices on one of the whaling vessels, we're able to follow them every step of the way. When they zig, we zag and while they're running, they can't whale. Operation Migaloo and Operation Migaloo II has been the longest ever harassment of a whaling operation since illegal whaling activities began in 1986.
Captain Paul Watson and some of his crew will not rest after defending whales when they return to Australia after three and a half months of chasing and harassing Japanese whaling ships, and will instead continue on to defend baby seals.

Within days of returning to Australia in late March, they will be flying halfway around the world to Bermuda where Sea Shepherd's other ship the Farley Mowat is docked. From there they will head North into the ice packs off Eastern Canada to defend nearly 300,000 baby harp seals from the ruthless clubs of Canadian sealers.

Saint David's Day (Welsh: Dydd Gŵyl Dewi) is the feast day of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales, and falls on 1 March each year.

The date of March 1st was chosen in remembrance of the death of Saint David on that day in 589, and has been celebrated by followers since then. The date was declared a national day of celebration within Wales in the 18th century.

A poll conducted for Saint David's Day in 2006 found that 87% of the Welsh wanted it to be a bank holiday, with 65% prepared to sacrifice a different bank holiday to ensure this. A petition in 2007 to make St. David's Day a bank holiday was rejected by Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Dewi Sant – St. David was born towards the end of the fifth century, less than a hundred years after the last Roman legions had marched out of Wales. He was the son of Sant a scion of the royal house of Ceredigion, his mother was Non, daughter of Cynyr of Caio, remembered by numerous churches and holy wells in Wales, Cornwall and Brittany. Educated at Henfynyw (Old Menevia) in Ceredigion, where he 'learned the alphabet, the psalms, the lessons for the whole year, the Masses and the Synaxis', he founded a Celtic monastic community at Glyn Rhosin (The Vale of Roses) on the western headland of Sir Benfro, at the spot where St. David's Cathedral stands today. The spot may well have been the site of a very early religious community, for it is also associated with St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, who was also born in Wales and is said to have spent time at Glyn Rhosyn before embarking again (this time voluntarily) for Ireland from Porth Mawr nearby.

David's fame as a teacher and ascetic spread throughout the Celtic world. He earned the curious nickname Dewi Ddyfrwr – David the Waterman – no doubt reflecting the harsh bread-and-water regime of Celtic monks. Many traditions and legends are associated with him. When he rose to address to a great crowd at a synod at Llanddewi Brefi in Ceredigion, the ground rose under his feet forming a little hill so that all could hear him speak. Again, a golden-beaked dove is said to have landed on his shoulder as a symbol of his holiness.
His foundation at Glyn Rhosin became one of the most important shrines of the Christian world, and the most important centre in Wales. Roads and tracks from all over the nation led to it and in the Middle Ages two pilgrimages to Menevia was equal to one to Rome (Dos i Rufain unwaith ac i Fynyw ddwywaith). Over fifty churches and innumerable holy wells were dedicated to him in Wales alone.
The religious centre of St David's thus became a focus for the religious aspirations of the Welsh nation and as Gerallt Cymro (Giraldus Cambrensis) relates: The Bishopric of St Davids became ... a symbol of the independence of Wales ... and that is why David himself was exalted into a Patron Saint of Wales.

The date of Dewi Sant's death is recorded as March 1st, but the year is uncertain – possibly 588.
Dewi Sant, was incidentally, the only patron saint of the four chief nations of the British Isles to have been born in the land which adopted him.

Eisteddfod Ysgol Penygelli 2008

Well what a fantastic Eisteddfod !!!!!!!!
It gave me huge pleasure today to attend the first Eisteddfod at Ysgol Penygelli for a number of years. Headmaster Mr Lewis really wanted to promote this to show that the English medium school can still celebrate our fortune in living in Wales.
The pupils showed wonderful skills and talent.
To be a judge was very difficult because the standards were so very very high. From singing to recital to handwriting to art and design technology.
I was extremely proud of the pupils celebrating Dydd Dewi Sant (a day early).
The fact that so many children wanted to enter into competition was superb. For all of those who did not come first I know the effort that went into every individual performance and I commend their efforts.
Thanks to the staff who assisted Mr Lewis, my fellow governors who gave up their time willingly.
My hope is that this can become an annual event.
I believe the school has the desire to make it happen.

The Wales and Llanelli Scarlets winger, Mark Jones, will be at Bryn Estyn Road at 10.30am this Sunday morning. He will present a DVD which is part of the Welsh Rugby Union sponsored "Champs not Chips" programme that is intended to combat obesity and encourage healthier eating for young people. Around 120 Under 11 rugby players drawn from the Wrexham and Rhos rugby clubs are expected to be present to meet Mark Jones who will also answer their questions.

Neil Sissons is currently compiling a program for The North Wales Rugby Academy u20's squad forthcoming fixtures. These include games against prestigious opponents such as Sale Sharks u19's academy, Welsh Academicals and a trial/training game on June 1st against the USA u20's squad as a warm up for their forthcoming world cup campaign.

This squad is rapidly becoming the most talked about emerging academy. The renewed professional approach is designed to provide a sound foundation for the forthcoming semi-professional North Wales Rugby Squad currently forecast to become reality in season 2010-11. Many of the stars in this current squad are tipped to be the nucleolus of this new, quality Northern district side, Gogledd Cymru's finest!

There are a limited number of advertising spaces in this program. A program which, without doubt will become a collectors item and cherished for many years to come by both spectators and all those involved in the the games, especially the USA game which will be monitored closely by many interested parties. MARTYN JONES MP EXPRESSES CONCERN ABOUT LIBERAL DEMOCRAT BIG LOTTERY FUND PROPOSAL

Martyn Jones MP today reacted with concern in response to comments by Roger Williams, Lib Dem Welsh Spokesman, who stated at the Party’s Conference this weekend that the Barnett Formula should be replaced by a funding regime structured similarly to the Big Lottery Fund.
The Big Lottery Fund has recently been shown to preferentially give out money to the South rather than the North of Wales. Wales was awarded nine grants under the Stepping Stones strand of the project and all of those projects were in the South. North Wales had several strong bids rejected.
Mr Jones stated:

“What kind of proposal is this? The Liberals would do well to remember that there is life in Wales outside of Cardiff. They cannot seriously propose a model of national funding which would be likely to treat the South more favourably than the rest of the country.

The way Wales is funded is a big debate and it is right that it is discussed. People I have spoken to this weekend want to know whether the Liberal Democrats seriously believe that the North of this country is less entitled to our national funds and if that is the case what possible grounds they could have for suggesting such a scheme. They have some serious questions to answer.”

This is typical liberals. They winge about something while supporting it. They clearly back south wales over north wales as this shows.

The BBC has discovered that Ryan Giggs will start studying for his Uefa 'A' Licence in June
Ryan Giggs may still be going strong on the football field but the 34-year-old seems set to extend his football career by coaching once he hangs up his boots.
But this summer he will start studying for his Uefa 'A' Coaching Licence, says FAW technical director Osian Roberts.
"Ryan has indicated he wants to come and do his Uefa 'A' Licence with us in Aberystwyth in June," Roberts said.
The burning question of course!
Will Giggs be as good a coach as he is a player?

"It's great news for us in Wales and I think it's also great news for football that someone of his calibre and status will stay in the game.
"With all his experience and expertise he's going to be a great and valued member to football in the future."

Mark Hughes Chris Coleman John Toshack all graduated from playing to becoming excellent coaches/managers.

Greener Wales

Plans for a "lean, clean and green" Wales, making it self-sufficient in renewable energy within 20 years, have been launched.
Environment Minister Jane Davidson said "sensitively but extensively exploited" use of wind, marine and biomass energy could make this happen. She said Wales could "lead the battle" against climate change, as its coal powered the industrial revolution.

A deadline of 13 May for responses from the public has been set. It is a delicate subject so if you have views, for or against, please make them known, as the impact of these proposals are huge for the future of Wales and our children.

Ms Davidson launched the so-called "route map" on renewable energy in Cwmbran.

"Our small country is already taking steps on the road towards a low carbon energy economy," she said.

"Just as we led the world in energy development during the 19th Century when our coal powered the industrial revolution, we again have a great opportunity to lead in the battle against climate change.

"If everyone in Wales works together on this I am confident that our community can make a very real contribution to tackling one of the biggest problems facing the world community."

Encourage wave and tidal energy with "minimum environmental distrubance"
Proceed in a "measured way" to use Wales's wind resource
Change planning guidance to make it easier for people to install wind turbines, solar panels etc at home
Explore new options for river hydroelectric power
Make the most of biomass such as forests, crops or residual waste materials
Ensure all new buildings in Wales are built to the highest possible low carbon standards
Develop a strong "green jobs" strategy

So Wrexham County Borough Council appears to spend about £100.00 a day on bottled water for its staff. For the fuller picture should we be told the additional cost of ice cubes and slices of lemon?
I believe the council does in fact have a duty to its employees to ensure their health and safety by providing water.
The question is! If Merthyr Tydfil Council can fulfill this obligation to their staff for zero cost, why does it cost the ratepayers of Wrexham over £25,000?
I am certain that there is an explanation. It does seem a large sum when you consider that water is on tap is supplied and is also being paid for.

It was a real treat to be invited to the official launch of REFGAS.
It was good to meet up with the First Minister Rhodri Morgan again and many other movers and shakers in Wales who support the green style that Refgas are promoting.

AN ELECTRICITY plant fuelled by commercial waste could meet the power needs of many communities across North Wales, says Refgas.
Flintshire-based company Refgas has devised a practical solution of what to do with waste while at the same time helping tackle the energy shortage, it claims.
It has produced a unique gasifier which takes in unrecyclable waste which would otherwise go to landfill and gasifies it to produce syngas, in turn powering an electrical generator.
The firm believes its technology can help Wales meet tough targets on cutting greenhouse gases as well as commercial waste sent to landfill.
Company chairman George Willacy said: “Our gasifier produces clean energy from unwanted waste. We are very proud of the innovation and functionality of the product.
“Significant amounts of electricity can be produced from small unobtrusive sites. This would not only help solve refuse disposal problems in small towns, but would also provide a source of local sustainable power from biomass.”

He added that Refgas has received excellent support from the Welsh Assembly Government which is very encouraging for a greener Wales.

Commercial director Rob Williams said the intention was to use commercial waste made up of biomass and unrecyclable plastics in the “clean burn” gasifier to produce combined heat and power.
He said the company had patented the processes it uses in its technology and was confident it had a headstart over would-be rivals.
Mr Williams added that although employment in Refgas was just four it had potential for growth.

It was good to see Mr Paul Roberts from WMBC attending the launch. I hope he will now go back the leader of the council and the lead member for environment (Pritchard) and try and explain to them if he can that Wrexham does not have to pay to send its waste to Kent and China. Penny might drop!!! I hope.

The television match official advised the referee that a try had been scored, and the coach of the losing team was up in arms about it.
The incident happened in the second half of the match between Wales and Scotland at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Not that it's relevant to the decision though it may well have been relevant to the coach's reported wrath, Wales were leading 20-15 at the time.
Shane Williams skated on an arc, straightened up and dived for the corner as Scotland's big Nikki Walker dived at him.
Williams grounded the ball in the goal area, but the referee referred the matter to the television match official. It was a difficult decision. In the end the TMO advised that a try had been scored and the referee awarded the try.
The Scotland coach, Frank Hadden, a gentlemanly man, is reported as launching a "scathing attack" on match officials and saying: "The video ref clearly got it wrong." ???????????????????????????
"Clearly" must be an exaggeration. It is understandable that the coach is suffering. He would be under the enormous pressure from without and from within himself. In two matches in the Six Nations, Scotland has failed to score a try. In three matches prior to that Scotland scored one try. One try in 400 minutes' worth of rugby. It suggests that there may be bigger problems than a momentary mistake by a television match official.
But was it a mistake???????
There is a principle that all referees subscribe to - you whistle for what you see, not what you don't see. If you have doubt, you do not whistle. It's not a matter of giving the benefit of the doubt to an attacker or ball-carrier; it just means not acting when in doubt. It is a principle that applies to all decisions - knock-on, forward pass, off-side, foul play - the lot.
If you do not apply that principle, you enter the realm of guesswork which is a soul mate of dishonesty.
The TMO has a checklist.
Was the ball grounded? Yes. If the answer had been no, there would have been no further need to worry.

Was Williams's right foot in touch? Careful watching suggests that it was not in touch.
Did his left thigh hit the cornerpost before he grounded the ball? Hard but it seemed that it had not done so. The baggy post does not start to bend till after the ball was grounded.
That leaves his left foot. Does it touch the touch-line? It's hard to see, looking down from above, as the TMO would have done.
Does his left foot touch the ground in touch? It's also so hard to see but what about that little piece of turf that moves further into touch? Where did the divot come from?
It could not have come from Walker's feet as they were in the air.
If it did indeed come from Williams's left foot, the try should not have been scored.
But it could have come from Williams's right foot which was not in touch. If that were the case, the try was the correct decision.

Unless there is evidence which the TMO did not have, it would seem that it would have had to have taken guesswork to deny the try. And guesswork, as we have said, is wrong.
In that case awarding the try seems honest and reasonable.

It was very good to have Martyn Jones my local M.P. visit Coedpoeth amongst his busy scheduel to see for himself the progress on the Coedpoeth Lifelong Learning Centre.
Funded by European money hard fought for by our Labour M.E.P.s and their colleagues it does show what can be achieved if there is a political will. The officers of the council and the local committee must also be congratulated on their excellent efforts to bring this project to fruition. The Urban Two monies obtained by my colleagues will make a huge difference to Coedpoeth.
More updates will follow as the opening day approaches.
The construction company are displaying very high quality standards in their work which is very encouraging for the long term future for the centre.

Well fancy that. The new National Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg has made a decision. After the next election, whenever that may occur, he has committed his Party to coalition with the Tories.
Great idea if you want to be with the Tories but is it not just easier to vote tory anyway.
Locally, Cllr Mark Pritchard, Lead Member for the Environment, heaps praise on the recycling position in Wrexham set up by the then ruling Labour group at Wrexham Council before he had even been elected.
Lib Dem Leader, Cllr Aled Roberts, says he and his unholy alliance of Independents and Tories, are proud of a low rate increase. That is fine for the people on high incomes. He does not say a word about the slashing of front line services for ratepayers.
For people who require these services such as social services or education, unfortunately the Liberals, Tories and Independents appear to want to destroy these vital services in order to put millions into reserves.
The Freedom of information act allows anyone to ask questions about Council finances.
You may be suprised to see where your money is or isn't being spent.

Of course it was a try. Wonderful stuff to see a smaller player on the world stage just showing what can be done. I hope that Shane can influence youngsters that there is a sport out there for you.
Leads me on to the North/South divide. Does it exist. I bought the Wales on Sunday this morning to see what was being said about the match. The Wales on Sunday had a lot to say about the rugby, Cardiff and Swansea reports about the football. Wrexham - nothing. I believe it is a disgrace that a paper that calls itself a national paper can leave out the premier club in North Wales.
I truely hope this was just a mistake but I was reading the 'southern' version of the paper.

The home side dominated possession and territory and their flair saw first half tries for Williams and James Hook.
But dogged Scotland held on through the boot of Chris Paterson, the wing landing all five of his goal kicks.
Leading just 17-15 on 60 minutes, Wales changed their half-backs and regathered The Welsh were looking to spread the ball in front of a record crowd at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, but Hook spun a midfield pass into the arms of Andrew Henderson.
Paterson hacked forward to the Wales line, securing the position from which the wing - restored to Frank Hadden's team this week after the miserable loss to France -opened the scoring with a 10th-minute penalty.
Wales hit back in style, Mike Phillips carrying powerfully after gathering a misjudged open-field chip from Hugo Southwell.

The ball was spun left, Hook putting Lee Byrne into space with a delightful pass after Gavin Henson helped straighten the line.
Byrne's pass went behind Williams, but the winger gathered and threw a trademark side-step to cross for the opening try, converted by Hook.
The visitors saw 50-cap man Nathan Hines sin-binned for foolishly lashing out at Byrne when he was held at a ruck.
The 14 men held out, Hook and Paterson exchanging penalties after his return to leave Scotland relieved with a scoreline of 10-6 at the break.
The visitors were soon back to within a point, Paterson slotting an easy penalty after a bullocking run from Allister Hogg, an impressive first-half injury replacement for skipper Jason White.
But Williams broke through a ball-watching defence, and when scrappy ball was flung left Hook saw Ross Ford and Euan Murray in front of him.
The fly-half went for the front-rowers and squeaked through the gap, touching down then converting his own score.
Hook was replaced with 20 minutes of the game to go. The unerring boot of Paterson clawed back two more penalties, though, cutting the gap to two points and prompting Wales coach Warren Gatland to replace half-backs Hook and Phillips with Stephen Jones and Dwayne Peel.
They helped keep Wales anchored in their opponents' half, Jones eking his side further ahead with a 65th-minute penalty.
Confidence rose in the home side, and after an impressive build-up the ball came to Williams who spotted half a yard of space in midfield.
The wing sailed outside Henderson and Southwell, before a desperate Nikki Walker tackle forced him to ground from mid-air with his body outside the touchline for a spectacular and hotly disputed try awarded by video referee Carlo Damasco.
Stephen Jones converted and added a penalty to complete a 100% kicking return from both teams, while his side showed the determination to deny the Scots a consolation try after a late rally.
Gatland will try to keep Welsh expectations in check, but with a home game against Italy in two weeks and a Triple Crown game in Dublin on 8 March, that seems unlikely.

Great night for Welsh football fans. John Toshack young side came good with a convincing 3 - 0 victory over Norway. It was particularly pleasing to see Wrexham born Jason Koumas stepping in with two goals. The crowd of over 7,000 must have enjoyed the match.
Can the Welsh Rugby team make it 2 out of 2 wins in the Six Nations with their clash against Scotland on Saturday????

Australia releases whaling photos.
Japan says the whale hunt is legal and for research purposes
Australia has released graphic pictures of minke whales caught by a Japanese hunt in the Antarctic.
Canberra claimed the pictures, taken by customs officers tracking the hunt, show a harpooned mother and calf being dragged from the sea.
Japan denied that claim and called the pictures "emotional propaganda". ?????????
Australian environment minister Peter Garrett said he hoped the "distressing" images would boost international opposition to the whale hunt.
Mr Garrett said they contradicted Japan's long-standing claim that the hunt was legal and for scientific research purposes.
"It is explicitly clear from these images that this is indiscriminate killing of whales, where you have a whale and its calf killed in this way," he said.
"And to claim that this is in any way scientific is to continue the charade that has surrounded this issue from day one."

Japan's Institute for Cetacean Research (ICR), which is supported by the government, released a statement accusing Australia of misleading the public by spreading "false information". Can you believe that.

A statement on the ICR website said the minke whales, both female, were 5.3m (17.4ft) and 8.3m (27.2ft) respectively but were not a mother and calf.
"It is necessary to conduct random sampling of the Antarctic minke population to obtain accurate statistical data," said Mr Morimoto.
Japan had planned to kill up to 900 minke whales and 50 fin whales during the expedition.

Australian Customs Minister Bob Debus said the pictures, taken by the crew of the surveillance vessel the Oceanic Viking, could be used as evidence in an international court case to end the hunt.
Hunting has only recently resumed after environmental activists from Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd disrupted the operation for three weeks.

Good Results

Well. Wales win at Twickenham. A great result.
Wales captain Ryan Jones described his team's stunning win over England as the greatest day of his career.
"It was a fantastic effort and the win was thoroughly deserved," said Jones, in his first game as skipper.
"Even when we were 10 points down we had belief in ourselves. We knew we were good enough."
But new coach Warren Gatland's revolution started in style as Wales fought back from a 16-6 half-time deficit to beat the old enemy in their own back yard for the first time since 1988.
Wales full-back Lee Byrne and scrum-half Mike Phillips both scored second-half tries, in reply to Toby Flood's score.
But it was the flawless kicking of James Hook that gave Wales a shot at glory and this team immortality.
The Wales outside-half kicked 16 points, four penalties and two conversions, as the pupil won the battle of the No 10s against England master Jonny Wilkinson.
Hook's heroics earned him the man-of-the-match award but he warned his team-mates not to be carried away by their success in the first week of the tournament.
"Beating England is great but we must keep our feet on the ground and not get too carried away.
"The win has boosted our confidence, but there are four other sides in this Six Nations Championship, not just England.

" Wrexham A.F.C. have another great win. Two home games were they have beaten the teams that were first and second in league 2.
Out of bottom place. It does seem that Brian Little is forming a team that will avoid relegation and if that is secured by the end of the season who knows where the club might be in a few seasons time.
Just look at the progress made at Swansea and Cardiff.

Yes it is snowing in Coedpoeth. The regulars at the Welsh class in the Golden Lion still braved the weather to continue their welsh improvement and to have a good time.

In complete disregard of common sense, he dropped a large lit firecracker, equivalent in strength to a quarter stick of dynamite, into his aluminum straight mute, and then stuck the mute into the bell of his new Yamaha in-line double-valve bass trombone.
Later from his hospital bed he explained to a reporter through a mask of bandages, "I thought the bell of my trombone would shield me from the explosion and focus the energy of the blast outwards and away from me, propelling the mute high above the orchestra like a rocket."

However Paolo was not to speed on his propulsion physics, nor was he qualified to wield high-powered artillery. Despite his haste to raise the horn before the firecracker exploded, he failed to lift the bell of the horn high enough for the airborne mute's arc to clear the orchestra. What happened should serve as a lesson to us all during our own delirious moments of divine inspiration.

First, because he failed to sufficiently elevate the bell of his horn, the blast propelled the mute between rows of musicians in the woodwind and viola section, where it bypassed the players and rammed straight into the stomach of the conductor, driving him backwards off the podium and directly into the front row of the audience.

Fortunately, the audience was sitting in folding chairs and thus they protected from serious injury. The chairs collapsed under the first row, and passed the energy from the impact of the flying conductor backwards into the people sitting behind them, who in turn were driven back into the people in the third row and so on, like a row of dominos. The sound of collapsing wooden chairs and grunts of people falling on their behinds increased geometrically, adding to the overall commotion of cannons and brass playing the closing measures of the Overture.

Meanwhile, unplanned audience choreography notwithstanding, Paolo Esperanza's Waterloo was still unfolding back on stage. According to Paolo, "As I heard the sound of the firecracker blast, time seemed to stand still. Right before I lost consciousness, I heard an Austrian accent say, "Fur every akshon zer iz un eekval unt opposeet reakshon!" This comes as no surprise, for Paolo was about to become a textbook demonstration of this fundamental law of physics.

Having failed to plug the lead pipe of his trombone, he paved the way for the energy of the blast to send a superheated jet of gas backwards through the mouthpiece, which slammed into his face like the hand of fate, burning his lips and face and knocking him mercifully unconscious.

The pyrotechnic ballet wasn't over yet. The force of the blast was so great it split the bell of his shiny new Yamaha trombone right down the middle, turning it inside out while propelling Paolo backwards off the riser. For the grand finale, as Paolo fell to the ground, his limp hands lost their grip on the slide of the trombone, allowing the pressure of the hot gases to propel the slide like a golden spear into the head of the third clarinetist, knocking him senseless.

My daughter plays the saxophone. Not in this style I hope.

Owain Glyndwr visits Ysgol Penygelli

A hugely entertaining hour for pupils at Ysgol Penygelli as the story of 'Owain Glyndwr' arguably the most famous figure in the history of Wales was told and acted by Stephen Attwell in a one man show. A BBC newsreader broadcasting for BBC Wales at weekends leaves Stephen time to work as the 'Bard Company' touring Wales with his many plays mainly concerning Welsh history.
From 1400 to 1410 owain Glyndwr's revolt was the last major rebellion against English rule and generated a remarkable vision of wales as an independant nation state complete with native prince,church and universities.
With the help of budding actors from Ysgol Penygelli the story unfolded. The razing of Ruthin, bloody battles, foreign alliances, Glyndwr's coronation, his parlaiments and finally the last hurrah at Harlech.
With clever use of costume, music and set the history lesson was brought to life and the pupils loved it.
It was an enthralling tale.

I have taken this from the Blog of Betsan Powys the BBC journalist and Political Editor for BBC Wales. She has summed up the situation since Peter Hain's resignation extremely well.
The posh doors were flung open yesterday and let me tell you, that doesn't happen very often.
Usually when we're called to a photo opportunity on the Senedd steps - and there have been plenty of those recently - the politicians stride purposefully through the same door as you and I do. Some, who've seen it all before, amble out, guarding against the cold wind of Cardiff Bay.
But not yesterday. For the new Welsh Secretary the posh doors, the ones I've only seen used before for the Queen on State Opening days, were thrown open. From our position outside we watched as Mr Murphy and Mr Morgan strode through the Neuadd, chatting animatedly as they went. On cue the man stationed at the posh doors threw them open.
If there's one things you know about the Senedd then no doubt you'll know it's transparent, or 'see-through' as one lad on a visit from West Wales once told me. The National Assembly likes to make the point that their home "is completely transparent at the public level and sits on a slate plinth which steps upwards from the waterfront and houses the private spaces of the building."
So we watched as they appeared beneath the "gently undulating roof" but yesterday there was no ambling. Paul Murphy and Rhodri Morgan knew what there were there to do and had ten minutes to do it before the new man headed back to London. It was a day for striding and for making a point.
What was that point? That Mr Murphy and Mr Morgan are mates; they're friends; butts since the old days when they arrived in Westminster as new boys together. I gather they were out to dinner on Sunday night and that Mr Murphy's first words when he walked into the office yesterday were "hyia butt". I think it's fair to say they wouldn't have been Mr Hain's choice of words.
Every other sentence was peppered with "trust" and "friendship". The purpose of the exercise was as transparent as the building: no-one believes the road ahead will be "gently undulating", in fact it's a pretty certain bet it'll be bumpy but these two are mates, who trust each other and that means they will get to the end of the road in one piece.
I almost swore I could hear the Rembrants' famous theme tune playing over the Senedd sound system but no, I must have imagined it. But we all heard the message loud and clear.
'When the rain starts to fall' Mr Murphy and Mr Morgan will be there for each other.
When some MPs have a moment of epiphany and realise there are things that are no longer their official business, Mr Murphy 'will be there' for Mr Morgan and his gang.
When some AMs have a moment of epiphany and realise there are things that are not - yet, if ever - their official business, Mr Morgan 'will be there' for Mr Murphy and his gang.
Job done, off they strode, still chatting, still keen to let us know that in this relationship, neither friend will be more equal than the other.

Dydd Santes Dwynwen

I spent the morning in Ysgol Penygelli and was extremely pleased that the story of St.Dwynwen had been told to the pupils hopefully to give them an understanding of what it is like to be 'Welsh'. I feel it is important that anyone who does not actually speak welsh can feel as welsh as the fluent speakers.
The story of Owain Glyndwr next week !!!! I will report on it.

Met Rhodri again last night. He was his usual jovial self and wonderful company. It is ironic that he was in Wrexham when the news about Peter Hain broke. It caused chaos to the news media who had to send satalite vans to Wrexhams' Ramada hotel to get their live interviews with Rhodri. Interesting times.

Good news. The rugby match between a North Wales 15 and Worcester was able to go ahead in spite of dreadful weatherduring the previous weeks. The result was a win by 69 to 7 for Worcester. Mick Ruddock and assistant Clive Griffiths brought to Wrexham a team of professionals all with Premiershire and International experience and their class showed particularly in the last quarter. Great experience for the North Wales boys who showed the high quality of rugby players that are in North Wales.

Finally I had to miss the gig at Central Station. The 'Gig Dwynwen' due to taxi driving committments to my family. I hope to get a review from one of my friends which I will post.

Fly away Peter - Come back Paul

Well. Lots of things to talk about tonight and Peter walks away albeit rather reluctantly. Rugby, Rhodri visit and Welsh will have to wait.
Peter Hain has quit the cabinet saying he wanted to "clear his name" after his Labour deputy leadership campaign donations were referred to the police.
The Electoral Commission passed the work and pensions and Wales secretary's late declaration of donations to police after a "thorough review" of the case.
In a statement Mr Hain said he felt he had "no alternative" but to resign.
I believe this is true. If you do not have a really good explanation why events happened then you walk the plank. This happens at all levels of society, in clubs and societies all over Britain. It is therefore even more important that the public can trust their elected members. So he had to go.

Paul Murphy. Experienced politician. He has done the job before. Very very capable.
Mr Murphy, 59, the MP for Torfaen, will return to the position he held for three years after the Welsh assembly was established in 1999.
He said the position of Welsh Secretary was "very dear to my heart as a Welsh MP" and there was a "very big job to be done".
Mr Murphy, who acknowledges he has never been an "enthusiast" of devolution, was against last summer's One Wales agreement which led to the coalition assembly government, but he said that would not get in way of his new job.
A strong anti devolutionist. It can only be assumed that his appointment is to make things difficult for the Assembly Government to grow and shake off the shackles of Whitehall and Westmister. I most certainly hope not.

I have been a non smoker now for 25 years. Yes I have found other things to spend the money I have saved on. I do believe that my health is much better than it would have been otherwise. I am sure that my enjoyment of walking in the hills and mountains of North Wales would not have been so great had I not stopped smoking.

I hope that smokers who gave up as a New Year resolution are trying to stick to it. The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for Wales, Dr Tony Jewell’s says that figures show that 2007 has been the best year so far for Stop Smoking Wales, the service funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and provided by the National Public Health Service to help smokers quit.
There was a 20 per cent increase in people wanting to give up in response to the introduction of smoke-free legislation, bringing the total number of people contacting the service to over 25,000 since 2004.
Around 70 per cent of smokers want to give up, and around half of those going through the Stop Smoking Wales programme succeed in quitting smoking for good – meaning they are four times more likely to give up with help than if they go it alone.

Dr Jewell said:

While the number of adult smokers is falling, there are still 6,000 premature deaths each year due to smoking. A quarter of adults in Wales still smoke – more than the UK average – and children are taking up the habit around the age of 12.

There is no disputing the devastating effects of smoking on the individual or their family and friends. In particular, I’d urge those who expose children to second-hand smoke to give up. More mothers-to-be smoke in Wales than in any other part of the UK and over a third of households with children still contain a smoker.

Many people have already given up thanks to Stop Smoking Wales, but there are many thousands more who want to give up who have yet to use their services.

Stop Smoking Wales offers free, friendly help to people who want to stop smoking. Smokers are four times more likely to stop smoking for good with help from our service than they are if they go it alone.

Dr Jewell added:

While smoking prevalence in Wales has fallen from 35 per cent in 1978 to 25 per cent today, we need to maintain our efforts to see further reductions.

10 facts about smoking in Wales:

It’s estimated that 6,000 people die from smoking each year.
Smoking is thought to account for 8 in 10 deaths from lung cancer; 3 in 4 deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; and 1 in 5 deaths from heart disease.
It is estimated that, on average, smokers die about 10 years younger than non-smokers.
25 per cent of adults in Wales smoke – 27 per cent of men and 24 per cent of women.
37 per cent of mothers in Wales smoked at some stage in their pregnancy or the year before it – with 22 per cent of mothers smoking throughout their pregnancy.
28 per cent of 15 year-old girls and 19 per cent of 15 year-old boys in Wales smoke regularly.
37 per cent of Welsh households with children contained at least one adult who smoked daily.
The area with the highest smoking rate is Blaenau Gwent (32 per cent of adults). The area with the lowest smoking rate is Monmouthshire (23 per cent of adults).
17 per cent in managerial and professional households in Wales smoke; this rises to 32 per cent in households in the routine and manual occupation group; and 48 per cent in the never-worked and long-term unemployed group.

of the 3,757 clients who were eligible for follow-up at 12 months, 2,433 were successfully contacted and of these, 1,110 or 45.1 per cent reported that they were still not smoking at 12 months.
3. Legislative action on smoking:

The ban on smoking in public places in Wales was introduced on 2 April 2007. It is estimated that as a result there will be 400 fewer premature deaths of non-smokers every year. Given the high level of compliance with the ban in Wales and the experience already seen in Scotland, we could potentially expect a 17 per cent reduction of hospital admissions for patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome amounting to 958 admissions.
Public acceptance of the ban has grown among both smokers and non-smokers since it was introduced. Survey findings from September 2007 are that 82 per cent of adults in Wales support the legislation (92 per cent of non-smokers and 58 per cent of smokers). This compares with 77 per cent of all adults in February 2007 (88 per cent of non-smokers and 51 per cent of smokers).

From 1 October 2007, the legal minimum age of sale for tobacco was raised from 16 to 18 years old.

Cull badgers to save cows.

Two sides to every story! Different opinions from different people. However the assembly government has made a big decision today. It is for you to judge if it is right or wrong. It was made by an all party committee so they must believe it is the best way forward for Wales.

I am not so sure.

Badger culls should be part of a "holistic" approach to tackling bovine tuberculosis (TB) in Wales, according to Assembly Members.
There was a "real link" between TB in cattle and the disease in wildlife, said the report.
But the RSPCA said a cull would make no meaningful contribution to the problem.

Although broadly welcoming the report, the Badger Trust Cymru said a cull would have "no scientific validity and will serve no useful purpose".
The report into controlling the disease in cattle was undertaken by the assembly's rural development sub committee.

Their findings concluded that only a combination of increased on-farm biosecurity, the control of TB in the wildlife population and the accurate identification of reactors would control the disease.

Animals who test positive as a bovine TB reactor means they may have come into contact with the disease and under government rules, these cattle must be shot.

Annual testing of cattle was one of the recommendations made in the report, and the report also stressed the importance of farmers and wildlife groups "taking ownership" of the problem.

The committee urged the assembly government to review the extent of its powers and if more were needed to implement their recommended approach to tackling bovine TB, they should seek them urgently.

"It is clear the assembly government will need to make substantial investments in the animal disease control and biosecurity infrastructure in Wales."

It seems rather unfair to kill a beautiful animal to alledgedly protect another animal that we intend to grow to kill it to eat for ourselves.

Warm Wales

Wrexham County Borough Council was the second local authority in Wales to launch a county wide fuel poverty and energy efficiency project. In partnership with Warm Wales, Wrexham council made it possible for every resident to have the opportunity to become more energy efficient.

Since the project started energy assessments have been carried out in thousands of homes. One of the things the scheme offers is free insulation to homes recieving qualifying benefits.
For those not on benefit loft insuation for example is offered at a heavily discounted price.
I personally had 8" loft insulation installed professionally for less than I could have bought the raw materials.
They offer other benefits and I have added a link to the Warm Wales web site with contact numbers.
It is an excellent scheme and I would urge residents in Wrexham County Borough to investigate and they could easily end up warmer, healthier and save money on energy costs.
The 'Bringing warm homes and improved health to Wrexham' project has to thank the Welsh Assembly Government in particular, National Grid, npower and Council Officers for getting this excellent scheme running so well.

Busy week for the welsh class in Coedpoeth.

Different visitors to the welsh class in the Golden lion in Coedpoeth will have different reasons to be busy this week.
The romantics will be looking forward to celebrating St Dwynwens day on Friday 25th January. Dwynwens day is the welsh equivalent of St Valentines day. I will provide a link for anyone that would like to know the whole story.
I will be with friends at Central Station in Wrecsam to watch the 'Gig Dwynwen'. The top of the bill will be Bryn Fon a'r Band.

On Wednesday evening a strong North Wales Rugby representative side are playing a Worcester 15. Back to Wales for Mike Ruddock and another visit to Wrexham Rugby Club who are hosting the match. (weather and playing conditions allowing). There is a link to Wrexham Rugby on the blog.

On Saturday week Wales play England in their opening match in this years Six Nations championship. Good luck to both teams, but a bit extra for Wales.

Lastly don't forget that the free welsh lessons are still available at the Golden Lion 8.00 to about 9.00 pm. All are welcome. No charge and every level from complete novice to some seeking improvement can be catered for.

Lovely to see Rhodri

RHODRI Morgan was very impressed by what he saw during a visit to our new Penygelli School in Coedpoeth.
Mr Morgan, who called in at the school as part of a series of visits across North Wales, chatted with staff and pupils during his visit as well as being shown round the school's top-of the range facilities.
The school was built thanks to an Assembly investment of more than £3 million.
I was proud both in my role as Local County Councillor and Chair of the Governing Body to show Rhodri around our fantastic new school.
"As I showed Rhodri where the money had been spent, it was clear he was very impressed with what he was seeing - and no wonder.
"All the Governors, and all of the staff, are very proud of the school and its facilities, and it is thanks to the Assembly's investment in Coedpoeth that we have such a good building for our children.
"The investment here has certainly paid dividends and I am very grateful to Rhodri for visiting today. I am sure there will be a few surprised parents tonight when they ask their children 'what did you do at school today' and get the answer ' I met the First Minister of Wales.'"
We were also fortunate enough that Rhodri had set aside enough time for a visit to Ysgol Bryn Tabor, the Welsh Medium Primary School as well. The refurbishment has meant that portocabins are history in Coedpoeth and Primary education in Coedpoeth is of the highest standard. This took the total investment in Coedpoeth to nearly £5.0 million
A huge thank you to Rhodri and the Labour Administration in Cardiff for the investment.

A BUDGET FOR FAMILIES & PENSIONERS
This Budget sets out increases in spending on public services; increases education spending to its highest ever levels; reforms the tax system to reward work, support families with children, and takes 600,000 pensioners out of income tax.
Key announcements

Further support for families, by increasing the child element of the Child Tax Credit by £150 a year, over and above the commitment to increase it in line with earnings to the end of this Parliament. This raises the child element to £2,080 a year lifting 200,000 children out of poverty;

· Increasing the threshold for the Working Tax Credit by £1,200 to £6,420 to improve work incentives;
· So almost £2 billion extra is being invested in tax credits in this Budget;
· Child Benefit will rise in three stages to £20 per week increasing faster than inflation. Child Benefit which was £575 a year in 1997 will by 2010 be over £1,000;

· Education spending will rise to £90 billion by 2010-11 the highest ever level, increasing UK education spending from 4.7 per cent of GDP in 1997 to 5.6 per cent by 2010-11;

· An increase in pensioner tax allowances taking 600,000 pensioners out of paying income tax;
· The basic rate of income tax cut from 22 pence to 20 pence from April 2008 with the 10 pence starting rate removed;

· Simplifying the tax system by aligning the upper earnings limit for national insurance with the higher rate threshold and over indexing both to avoid people losing out

· The headline corporate tax rate will be cut from 30 per cent to 28 per cent from April 2008 together with other significant reforms to the corporate tax system;

· Measures to encourage energy efficiency and tackle climate change including an increase in fuel duty rates from 1 October 2007; and increasing Vehicle Excise Duty on the most polluting cars, while cutting it for the less polluting;

· Extending the Financial Assistance scheme from its present budget of £2 billion to a total of £8 billion so that every one of the 125,000 workers will now receive help. Reporting later this year we will investigate, in full, the assets within the affected schemes and how we can use them further to support affected pensions.

· An updated economic forecast, which shows that the UK economy is stable and growing, and that the Government is meeting its strict fiscal rules for sound public finances over the economic cycle.

It seems alright with me. A confident Government governing.

A huge disappointment for Wrexham Football Club this weekend. A defeat that puts them back into the bottom two. Very unlucky but when you are down luck seems to desert you. I am still confident that they can get out of trouble and still be a league club next year.
The boys have won a game at last. There is no greater pleasure than beating England and a couple of young players who are doing really well. Adam Wyn Jones and James Hook!!!

Hook showed maturity beyond his years to see Wales to victory
Man-of-the-match James Hook dedicated Saturday's Six Nations win over England to the long-suffering Wales fans.
"The fans have been great and stuck by us so we wanted to get a result for them," said Hook, 21, who scored 22 points in the 27-18 victory in Cardiff.
"Every Welshman gets up for playing against England and we are so pleased to get the result.
"I was disappointed to miss a couple of kicks but I was so glad when the last went over to take us two scores clear."
The victory ensured Wales avoided a Six Nations whitewash and gave under-fire coach Gareth Jenkins his first victory over one of world's top sides after 10 games in charge.
He said: "We are a work in progress, it's our first Six Nations together and it's a tough tournament.
It's great to finish on a high but we have to look at the negatives and analyse them Wales captain Gareth Thomas.
"We've been on the wrong end in four games but we've learned lessons and brought them all to this game.
"We are delighted to end the season with a win. It was a special place here today, that support there helped us to a great result."
Jenkins added: "It means so much in Wales, we've been under pressure and rightly so, but that win is going to do us a lot of good.
"The forwards have been growing through the tournament, I really felt they came of age today and that will be a major boost to their self-confidence.
"The result shows that team has great potential, we can look forward to Australia in May and the build-up to the World Cup."
But Gareth Thomas, who captained the side in Stephen Jones' absence, warned that Wales still had plenty to put right.
"We need to be realistic," he said. "As a nation we'll go crazy after that [win], but as a team and management we need to look back and realise that there have been some really bad times too.
"It's great to finish on a high, but we have to look at the negatives and analyse them."

Airbus staff hold rally over cuts.
The day of action is in protest at 1,600 proposed job cuts in the UK
Around 900 workers at the Airbus factory in Flintshire have staged a rally in Chester in protest at the expected loss of hundreds of jobs.
The plane maker is axing 10,000 posts across Europe over four years to cut its costs, with 1,600 going in the UK.
Half the losses are expected at the Broughton site, which makes wings for the A380 superjumbo.
Airbus says its costs are far too high and must be reduced to speed up production and improve competitiveness.
Unions believe the job cuts will be shared equally between the 7,000 staff at Broughton and the Airbus plant at Filton near Bristol.
Around 400 people gathered in Chester town hall, while hundreds more were outside to listen to the meeting through loudspeakers.
Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami, one of the speakers at the "day of action," said: "We need a strong and united approach to this issue.
"The unions are leading a robust fight for long-term job security and I am proud to be standing shoulder-to-shoulder with so many skilled and loyal workers."
The meeting was also addressed by Alyn and Deeside AM Carl Sergeant, and Wrexham MP Ian Lucas, who all pledged their support to maintaining a future for Broughton's workforce.
The firm has pledged not to enforce any compulsory redundancies, saying half the cuts will be made among temporary staff and sub-contractors.

This story illustrates the unique relationships that Neighbourhood Wardens can make to an area. It is a great shame that the Liberal led council decided to get rid of them in Wrexham.
Street Wardens to the rescue for Henry the Hamster!
Tamworth Street Wardens are always at the heart of the community and deal with a range of incidents but Henry the Hamster took things to a new extreme! A distressed tenant from Crossfell, Stonydelph went into the East Area Housing office desperate for help to rescue Henry the hamster who had got trapped down a hole which is 100mm wide and 4ft deep in the tenant’s kitchen. Henry had been stuck down the hole for 24hrs, the RSPCA had said that they could not offer any help and the Councils Caretaking Services Manager also made an unsuccessful attempt to rescue the hamster.

Not willing to give up on poor Henry, Jane and Pete the local Street Wardens stepped in. The Wardens tried a variety of methods and anything they could think of to save Henry. From hamster ladders tied together to Curly Wurly’s tied on a piece of string the wardens tried everything. The final idea was a vacuum cleaner with a crevice tool on it, obviously this was a last resort and the Wardens took every care to make sure that Henry was not harmed. Jane lay on the floor under the sink with her arm forced as far down the hole as pain would allow reassuring Henry and making sure that he was ok.

The owner’s son was terrified of Henry and so not only did the Street Wardens rescue him but they then set out to find a new home for him. The Wardens also took Henry to a local vet for a check up after finding a little blood in his cage to make sure that he was ok after his ordeal. He had worn his nails down trying to get out so had to have an antibiotic injection. The kind staff at the East area Housing office all put together to help foot the bill and this caring gesture means that Henry was given a clean bill of health from the Vet. Henry is now safe and sound and has been given a good home by the Councils Customer Services Manager who has adopted him for her son. Just another day in the life of a Tamworth Borough Council Street Warden!

“This is a lovely story which is another great example of the work that the Street Wardens carry out,” said Councillor John Garner, Portfolio holder for Environment and Community Safety “Not only are they heavily involved with the serious issues such as anti social behaviour, vandalism and educating children in schools but they are also there as a friendly face in the community who are always willing to lend a helping hand wherever possible. Our Street Wardens aren’t just a face in a uniform and don’t just patrol the community, but they are part of the community.”

O.K. a Coedpoeth expression. The ball is in the river. Basically bad news. So the Welsh team to face the Old Enemy??? The same players, some more heart required after last week's performance.
I will predict another Welsh victory ( I have done this 4 times this 6 Nations and been wrong every time so far!!!!)

Wales Coach Gareth Jenkins has kept the faith and named an unchanged side to face England at the Millennium Stadium.
Jenkins retains all twenty-two players involved in the last-gasp RBS Six Nations defeat to Italy on his team-sheet to face England this Saturday (March 17th).
Jenkins knows he did not get the result or performance required from his team last weekend and refuses to make any excuse for the loss regardless of the controversy surrounding the final seconds of the game. He says has genuine belief in his players and has handed them a second chance to get it right.
“This selection is very much a message to these players that we believe in them,” said Jenkins.
“We believe in their talents and we don’t think we are very far away from putting the kind of performances together that will start winning us matches. They have a second chance as a group to prove what they can do and we are all backing them to do it.
“We are a proud group and we are returning home to the Millennium Stadium after five tough weeks on the road. We have played three away matches back-to-back and we are looking forward to returning to our spiritual home in Cardiff.
“We haven’t won a game in this championship and that hurts the whole squad and management team, but we said we had been able to select our strongest side against Italy and we still believe that to be true and have endorsed that selection this weekend.
“There are things we need to change on match-day to come away with a win, but the selection process we have gone through tells us that this is the right team to beat England.
“There was a danger of making changes for changes sake and when we took all of the emotion out of the defeat last weekend and looked at the facts it became obvious to us that we have the right players in the right places.
“We made mistakes and where one or two things that could have gone our way might have changed the result, we know we only have ourselves to blame for failing to close the game down. We have learnt a harsh lesson and the same players have the chance to prove they can be better than that.
“The message is not that we got everything right last week, but that we believe this group of players is capable of getting it right and capable of beating England.
“We believe in them and we are sticking with them and giving them the chance to show how good they can be in front of our home fans this weekend.”
Stephen Jones (eye injury), Chris Horsman (foot) and Matthew Rees (leg) have all been passed fit allowing Jenkins to maintain consistency of selection for the first time in the current campaign.
“Stephen has recovered from the impact injury which forced him to leave the field against the Azzurri and we are confident he is fit to lead the team again against England,” added Jenkins.
“It is a major boost to the side that the captain will be able to take to the field. Stephen’s contribution is invaluable, he has been inspirational and hugely encouraging to the squad as we lift ourselves this week and he is a huge leader.
“The strengths that we see from Stephen inside the camp may not be obvious to everyone on the outside, but he brings an emotional intensity and positive input to his leadership role that makes him invaluable to this team

In view of yesterday's blog I would like you to read this.
I just wonder if this web site could be useful for some residents who find it difficult to contact through the usual channels their Councillor, Community Council or County Council representatives.

Fly Tipping in Coedpoeth

Very disappointing news in Coedpoeth this week. A couple who live on Heol Offa woke up to discover that a pile of rubbish had been dumped (fly tipped) outside their home.
Coedpoeth has a community recycling centre next to the Community centre in the village and the larger centre close by in the Lodge.
There is no real excuse for this type of behaviour and it must be frustrating for the vast majority of Coedpoeth residents who responded enthusiastically to the Recycle with Michael scheme.
I would urge any resident who sees or suspects more fly tipping to contact me as soon as possible.
Meanwhile the regular walkabout the village that myself, a housing officer and if available the Police Community Beat Manager conduct will take place tomorrow (Wednesday) 2.00 pm. We will visit Heol Offa amongst other areas.

Good news for Coedpoeth residents. Coedpoeth is the next community in Wrexham County Borough to benefit from 'Warm Wales - Bringing Warm Homes to Wrexham'. The initiative is aimed at tackling the problems of fuel poverty in Wrexham County.Anyone that knows Coedpoeth will know how cold an area it can be so this initiative is especially welcomed by myself.
I will briefly outline the scheme but for more information contact me on 01978 753282 or Warm Wales on 01978 667112. I have added a link to the Warm Wales Wrexham website which has full details.
Warm Wales Wrexham is a county wide fuel poverty and energy efficiency project. It is possible for every resident to have the opportunity to become more energy efficient.
The aim is to deliver loft and cavity wall insulation free of charge to tens of thousands of homes in Wrexham.
Your council has worked with National Grid and npower to find funds for this service. That means you won't have to pay a penny.
All Wrexham County Borough Council homes will have free insulation, where required, as part of the scheme.
The 'Bringing warm homes and improved health to Wrexham' project involves many other organisation too - including the Wales Assembly Government, National Grid and npower - who have created a dynamic partnership to help eradicate fuel poverty and tackle energy efficiency on a large scale.
Wrexham council also wants to help residents improve their health, wellbeing and home safety. The Bringing warm homes and improved health to Wrexham project raises awareness of and refers householders to council departments and organisations that already offer services within the county. The council's own Health Promotion and Social Services teams, the Community Safety Police, the Fire Safety team and Care & Repair Wrexham deliver services in partnership with Warm Wales.
'Bringing warm homes and improved health to Wrexham' has taken the best ideas and practices from the most successful of the 5 Warm Zone pilots schemes set up by the Labour Government between 1999 to 2004. The scheme has developed these ideas to achieve higher levels of success.

Welsh Classes

The Welsh classes at the Golden Lion in Coedpoeth are proving to be very popular. With more and more interested people coming along to see what is on offer. The class is in danger of outgrowing the conservatory at the Lion and may have to move into the restaurant in the Lion where there would be more room.
Last night had a full house. Phil Jones as the main tutor has three others supporting him and all levels can be catered for from absolute beginner to almost fluent. The lessons are still free.

Dating agency for dogs

A North Yorkshire pensioner has set up an online dating agency for dogs.
Liz Tattersall, 62, of Selby, decided to act after her sister-in-law, a dog breeder, couldn't find a suitable stud dog.
She got together with web designer son, Tony Carson, 39, and set up www.dogstogether.com, reports the York Press.
Liz said: "Like any dating service, if you are meeting other dog owners for the first time, do so in a public place or take someone along with you."
Tony added: "The original idea was for a website on which people could put a profile of their dog if they were wanting to breed from it, and were looking for a suitable match.
The website also allows dog owners to get in contact to organise group walks, rehome dogs or just chat online to exchange tips.
Liz said: "There are a few ladies in the village, who go walking their dogs together. It's so much more fun if you get a group.
Liz is fairly new to dogs herself, with mongrel Bertie her first. "He's given me so much pleasure, he's a lovely dog," she said.
I don't know what my Meg the Basset would make of it.

Council votes to merge 10 schools

At yesterday's Executive Board meeting further school mergers were agreed. As Chair of Governors at Ysgol Penygelli I can say that the process was not easy but the end result made it very worthwhile.

A series of school mergers across Wrexham have been approved by Wrexham Council.
The amalgamations are part of an ongoing review of primary schools provision in response to falling pupil numbers.
Five pairs of infant and junior schools will merge by September and another seven pairs could be merged over the next eight years.
In Wrexham, predicted population figures estimate a drop in school age children of 8.4% by 2023. In September 2006 there were 11,569 pupils registered in Wrexham primary schools, compared to 12,074 in 2001.

However, in some areas of Wrexham, like Brymbo, where there has been a huge housing development on the former steelworks site, the council is now looking at the possibility of providing a purpose-built new school

Terry Garner, head of the education service in Wrexham, said:" Wrexham has a tradition of very good infant and junior schools, sometimes on the same site.
"Whilst that has served us well in the past, we are noticing in parts of the county borough changes in pupil numbers - sometimes quite significant reductions (and) growth elsewhere."

Well it worked well in Coedpoeth.

What is Fairtrade?
Look at the FAIRTRADE Mark. It says “Guarantees a better deal for Third World producers”. That is exactly what it does! The Third World is used to describe poorer countries in The Americas, Africa and Asia.
Many farmers in these developing countries have to contend with fluctuating prices that may not even cover what it costs to produce their crop. So Fairtrade promises a stable price which covers their production costs, along with a premium that their organisation will be able to reinvest either in the business or local community schemes.
Definition of Fairtrade “Fairtrade is an alternative approach to conventional international trade. It is a trading partnership which aims at sustainable development for excluded and disadvantaged producers. It seeks to do this by providing better trading conditions, by awareness raising and by campaigning.” Can we trust Fairtrade? Yes! because: A clear set of standards defining the Fairtrade terms is available to consumers and producers. These terms are devised internationally by the Fairtrade Labelling Organisation (FLO). An independent organisation oversees the whole system (in the UK, the Fairtrade Foundation). Independent monitoring systems ensure that the Fairtrade principles and criteria are met and that individual producers are benefitting.
Producers themselves are involved in the Fairtrade process. How does Fairtrade work? Producers are paid a fair price - guaranteed to be always above the world price, and to cover the cost of production. So if a crop price collapses on the world market, growers selling to Fairtrade are protected and have stability allowing them to plan ahead. An additional premium is paid on Top. Producers themselves decide how this is to be spent - it can be improving local conditions - building a health centre or school - or put back into the business. Non Fairtrade does not promise anything beyond the single contract. In Fairtrade, there is a promise of a long term trading relationship. This makes it much easier for farmers to plan for the future.
They can also get loans from banks more easily. Producers must belong to democratic organisations. These decide how to spend the premium. These are almost always co-operatives. Fairtrade suppliers agree to follow internationally agreed labour standards: they will recognise trade unions; they will not use child labour or forced labour; they will not discriminate on the basis of sex, or religion, or caste; and they will provide decent working conditions. Fairtrade suppliers promote environmental sustainability, for example, by reducing pesticide use.

Llanelli Warriors.

I found this site almost by accident, but when I read what was happening in Llanelli I was really impressed by the team, supporters, volunteers and sponsors. It does show what rugby (or other sport) can bring into peoples lives.

Winning Warriors reach milestone
The Llanelli Warriors played their 100th game against Betws
A west Wales rugby club set up to give players with learning disabilities a chance to enjoy the sport has marked its 100th game.
The Llanelli Warriors were formed at the town's Heol Goffa day centre and are celebrating their 10th season. The club plays full contact rugby against other club, pub and works' teams and has gone from a handful of games each year to a full fixture list.

The Warriors will mark the end of this season (2005)with a tour to New Zealand.

Coach Gwilym Lewis said: "About half the team are people with learning disabilities and the others are then friends and relatives.

"Because they enjoyed watching rugby but did not really have the chance to play the team was set up to give them a chance to have a go.
"It's full contact - the only difference is there are passive scrums but its quite important its full contact as the boys enjoy that as much as any other part of the game.

"A couple of the players have gone on from the Warriors to play other local clubs. It's great for everybody."
Some of the players did not have the chance to play before.
Mr Lewis said the standard had improved and the fixture list had become more crowded, with up to 25 games being played this season - twice as many as normal.

"When the first game was organised everybody was a bit nervous as it was just a one off. Now we are a club in our own right, separate from Heol Goffa."
"Hopefully others will see what we are doing and be inspired to do the same. We are always looking for new players, new teams to play against and new sponsors."

Doesn't that make you feel good. That's rugby for you.

Dydd Dewi Sant. St. Davids day

Next Thursday 1/3/2007 the Welsh learners group that meet in the Golden Lion in Coedpoeth are meeting an hour earlier 7-8 to enable everyone to enjoy some Welsh food and some entertainment from a member of the learners group.
There will be some cawl - or leek broth: the traditional St. David's Day meal. Bara Brith and Welsh cheeses.

There is no charge at all.

The Charity quiz which always follows our lesson is going to be Welsh themed. I hope I do well.

Come along and see what we are doing in Coedpoeth. All levels of ability from absolute beginner to someone quite fluent will find a table to suit them as we have 3 or 4 volunteers to sit with you and help you enjoy a Welsh lesson.

Mixed bag

Well Wales lost again but with a much improved performance. I felt Ian Gough had a great game and we did score 3 tries. Italy only took 6 minutes for their first three in an amazing game in Scotland. I enjoyed seeing Ireland playing so well at Croke Park but hope they are not quite so good when I make my first visit to the home of the GAA Gaelic Athletic Association next year.
Wrexham Football Club disappoint again. They have a real battle on their hands now to avoid slipping out of the League.
On a more possitive note I did watch 'Big Business' performing at the Golden Lion in Coedpoeth Saturday evening. Another fantastic performance.

Praising the strength of First Minister Rhodri Morgan’s leadership, Tony Blair today warned that voting for any of the opposition parties in the Welsh election would usher in a Tory led rag-bag coalition government in the Assembly. He said it would be a vote for the unknown that would put Welsh Labour's record on the economy and public services at risk.
He said: “The policies of our opponents are not consistent with one another. They are not even consistent within their parties never mind consistent between their parties.''

“What policy they have on education? We would not know. What policy on health? We would not know. What policy on economic development?”

He added: “If that happened, think then for the people who are making investment in the economy of Wales. Don't take the economic strength of Wales for granted. The school improvements, the record NHS investment - it didn't happen by chance. It happened because Wales had strong leadership which in partnership with a strong Government in the UK, that was delivering a strong economy and deciding to make that investment. If you want it to continue there is only one sure certain way for it to continue. Return Rhodri and Welsh Labour on May 3.”
Rhodri Morgan has unveiled a £1bn package to drive forward improvements for the people of Wales, including:

· £450m for social housing
· £100m for safer roads
· Free childcare for two-year-olds in Communities First areas
· A £200m business investment plan.
· More cash for anti-graffiti and litter-collecting squads.

The PM said: “I think the programme Welsh Labour has put together is exciting, it's progressive, it's modern, it addresses the needs of the people of Wales.”

Women playing Rugby !!! Why not.

Wales Women's Non Evans has made a fanstastic recovery from injury to appear on the bench in this weekend's clash with France. Good luck to her.
Non Evans has recovered from an horrific injury and is named on the bench as Wales Women face their toughest challenge so far when they take on France at Stade Guy Moquet à Drancy, Paris, on Saturday (kick-off 1.30pm) in search of a third win in their Six Nations campaign.
Evans suffered multiple breaks, a dislocation and ligament damage to her right leg during the French game in the 2006 championship. Medics thought the seriousness of the injury would end her playing career but, in less than 12 months, she is set to represent her country once again.
Head coach, Fielies Coetsee commented, "It is great to have the opportunity to select Non in the team again and it is a real boost for everyone involved. It is a testament to her strength and will power to be back to full fitness."

Evans added, "I am absolutely delighted to be selected on the bench as I have been itching to get back into the winning team. I am hoping to get some game time in the second half and prove myself enough so I can start in the next game against Italy."

Coetsee makes a few minor changes to the line-up following their victory over Scotland. Amy Broadstock starts as hooker in place of Rhian Bowden, who is named on the bench, and there are also changes to the bench as Caryl Thomas and Non Evans replace Hannah Roberts and Stacey Saunders.

Coetsee added, "This will, without a doubt, be the most challenging game so far in this year's Six Nations. We will have to produce our best performance of the season to beat France on French soil and, after losing to us last year, they will be seeking revenge.

"The players are well aware of the task ahead and I am confident that we can win. One thing I do know for certain is that, at kick-off on Saturday, you will not find twenty-two more passionate and dedicated players wanting to do their country proud."

North-south flight firm revealed today.

Ten companies tendered to run the link with Cardiff International Airport
The firm picked to run a proposed air link between Anglesey and Cardiff is expected to be named by Enterprise Minister Andrew Davies.
It is hoped the service will run twice daily on weekdays, cost around £50 each way and begin in the spring.
The assembly government has spent £1.5m on a terminal at RAF Valley and will subsidise the service for three years.
The journey from north to south Wales by road takes between 3-5 hours, but by air it will be around 40 minutes.
Supporters said the flights will improve internal business and tourism links.
But critics have argued they will only cater for the wealthy, or people who get free travel, and that the A470 should be improved instead. A good point I think.
Promoters of the idea have seen a number of attempts at linking north and south Wales by air, but none have ever lasted for a significant period of time.
The assembly government gave the latest scheme its backing after a 2004 consultation exercise found there was a strong need for the service.

Plans for up to 10 flights a day from the new terminal at the RAF base in Valley were approved by Anglesey councillors in June 2006.
Enterprise Minister Andrew Davies will announce on today which of the 10 companies that tendered has been chosen to operate the service which will carry a maximum of 36 people on each flight.
The exact amount of the assembly government's subsidy will be announced in 10 days when the contract with the operator is finalised.
But after three years, the subsidy will have to end and the service will only continue if it is commercially viable.

Many people including myself use E.Bay, but is it really safe. It seems that there is always someone out there trying to defraud you.
Scams cost UK consumers over £3.5bn each year, according to new figures released by Government watchdog the Office of Fair Trading (OFT). Just some of the tricks designed to part us from our cash include spam emails, texts and internet pop-ups – and a month-long campaign has now been launched to help us combat them.

Scams Awareness Month aims to educate consumers about the increasingly sophisticated techniques used by fraudsters. Even the most common scams can have disastrous effects. Bogus holiday offers – where victims are invited to collect a prize and join an exclusive club, which then doesn’t deliver what it promises – cost us £1.17bn a year alone, with 400,000 victims each losing £3,030 on average.

Now criminals are stepping up their attacks on two of the world’s most popular websites – auction site eBay and payment site PayPal. The two firms were the first and third most popular targets for so-called “phishing” attacks in January, according to community site PhishTank.

Big firms fight back
Phishing attacks are possibly the most lethal scams in circulation. A typical example sees criminals sending spoof emails to lead the recipient to websites designed to trick them into entering financial data such as credit card numbers, account user names and passwords.

Now the big boys have stepped up their efforts to fight the fraudsters. PayPal has recently introduced a security token. The token, which costs about £2.50, generates a random, six-digit code every 30 seconds which is then used as part of the login process for the website. Customers will also need to enter their user name and password.

Just been watching a t.v. programme about Kurt Cobain and his sad death at a very young age. His band Nirvana are one of my favourites and I will do a little biog.
The sad thing is, he found life too hard to cope with and eventually killed himself. A sad and premature end to a life that could have gone anywhere. I will try and find links for anyone that reads this that also finds daily life has huge pressures.

Kurt Donald Cobain was the leader of Nirvana, the multi-platinum grunge band that redefined the sound of the nineties.

Cobain was born on the 20th of February 1967 in Hoquaim, a small town 140 kilometres south-west of Seattle. His mother was a cocktail waitress and his father was an auto mechanic. Cobain soon moved to nearby Aberdeen, a depressed and dying logging town.

Cobain was for most his childhood a sickly bronchitic child. Matters were made worse when Cobain's parent's divorced when he was seven and by his own account Cobain said he never felt loved or secure again. He became increasingly difficult, anti-social and withdrawn after his parent's divorce. Cobain also said that his parent's traumatic split fueled a lot of the anguish in Nirvana's music.

After his parent's divorce Cobain found himself shuttled back and forth between various relatives and at one stage homeless living under a bridge.

When Cobain was eleven he heard and was captivated by the Britain's Sex Pistols and after their self-destruction Cobain and friend Krist Novoselic continued to listen to the wave of British bands including Joy Division the nihilistic post-punk band that some say Nirvana are directly descended from in form of mood, melody and lyrical quality.

Cobain's artistry and iconoclastic attitude didn't win many friends in high school and sometimes earned him beatings from "jocks" Cobain got even by spray painting "QUEER" on their pick-up trucks. By 1985 Aberdeen was dead and Cobain's next stop was Olympia. Cobain formed and reformed a series of bands before Nirvana came to be in 1986. Nirvana was an uneasy alliance between Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic and eventually drummer and multi-instrumentalist Dave Grohl

By 1988 Nirvana were doing shows and had demo tapes going around. In 1989 Nirvana recorded their rough-edged first album Bleach for local Seattle independent label Sub-Pop

In Britain Nirvana received a lot of recognition and in 1991 their contract was bought out by Geffen, they signed to the mega-label, the first non-mainstream band to do so. Two and a half years after Nirvana's first C.D. Bleach was released they released Nevermind, a series of different, crunching, screaming songs that along with it's first single Smells Like Teen Spirit would propel Nirvana to mainstream stardom.

Smells Like Teen Spirit became Nirvana's most highly acclaimed and instantly recognizable song. Not many people can decipher it's exact lyrics but Cobain used a seductive hookline to hook the listener.
It quickly became obvious that the obsessively sickly and sensitive 24yr old was not going to cope well with the rock'n roll lifestyle. "If there was a rock star 101 course, I'd really have like to take it," Cobain once observed. Cobain fell into heroin in the early 90's, he said he used it as a shield against the rigorous demands of touring and to stop the pain of stomach ulcers or an irritated bowel. Through the touring and pressure Cobain continued to write his very personal acutely focused lyrics.

Cobain was distressed to find out that what he wrote and how it was interpreted could quite often be miles apart. He was appalled when he found out that Polly a heavily ironic anti-rape song had been used as background music in a real gang-rape. He later appealed to fans on the Incesticide liner notes "If any of you don't like gays or women or blacks, please leave us the f**k alone." It was to no avail, Cobain found that as an overnight millionaire musician control was something he had very little of. Cobain also worried that his band had sold-out, that it was attracting the wrong kind of fans (i.e the type that used to beat him up.)

In February 1992 Cobain skipped off to Hawaii to marry the already pregnant Courtney Love. Later in the year Nirvana released Incesticide and in August Cobain had hospital treatment for heroin abuse. Shortly after Frances Bean Cobain was born. In early 1993 In Utero was released into the top spot on the music charts. In Utero was widely acclaimed by the music press and it contains some of Cobain's most passionate work. In Utero was a lot more open than Nirvana's previous albums. Songs like All Apologies and Heart Shaped Box detailed aspects of Cobain's sometimes shaky marriage, other songs like Scentless Apprentice detailed the agonies and struggles of Cobain's experiences.

Nirvana embarked on a support tour and recorded and filmed an "unplugged" (acoustic) performance for MTV in November of 1993. Nirvana's choice to honour bands and people that had influenced them and Cobain's passionate and intense vocals especially on "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?"silenced many of their who had labeled Cobain talentless. Rumors circulated that the MTV Unplugged compilation would be Nirvana's last album and the band were splitting up.

Cobain was a gun fanatic and always had several in his possession or in various forms of confiscation. In the northern winter of 1993-94 Nirvana embarked on an extensive European tour. Twenty concerts into the tour Cobain developed throat problems and their schedule was interrupted while he recovered. While recovering Cobain flew to Rome to join his wife who was also preparing to tour with her own band.

On March the 4th Cobain was rushed to hospital in a coma after an unsuccessful suicide bid in which he washed down about fifty prescription painkillers with champagne. The suicide bid was officially called an accident and was not even made known to close friends and associates. Several days later he returned to Seattle. Cobain's wife, friends and managers convinced Cobain, who was still in deep distress to enter a detox program in L.A. According to a missing person's report filed by his mother Cobain fled after only a few days of the program.

Cobain was cited in the Seattle area with a shotgun. Days later on the 5th of April he barricaded himself into the granny flat behind his mansion, put a shotgun in his mouth and pulled the trigger. On Thursday April the 7th ~ two days after a medical examiner says Cobain shot himself and the day before his body was found police say Courtney Love herself was taken to hospital in L.A. for a drug overdose. Released on bail, Love checked herself into a rehab center but left soon after a friend called her the next day with news of Cobain's death.

Cobain's body was found when an electrician visiting the house to install a security system went round the back of the house when no one answered the front door and peered through windows. He thought he saw a mannequin sprawled on the floor until he noticed a splotch of blood by Cobain's ear. When police broke down the door they found Cobain dead on the floor, a shotgun still pointed at his chin and on a nearby counter a suicide note written in red ink addressed to Love and the couples then 19 month old daughter Frances Bean.

The suicide note ended with the words "I love you, I love you." Two days after Kurt Cobain's body was found about 5,000 people gathered in Seattle for a candlelight vigil. the distraught crowd filled the air with profane chants, burnt their flannel shirts and fought with police. They also listened to a tape made by Cobain's wife in which she read from his suicide note. Several distressed teenagers in the U.S. and Australia killed themselves. The mainstream media was lambasted for it's lack of respect and understanding of youth culture.

A sad end to a very talented musicians life. It does for me prove drugs don't work. If you are having problems try and find someone to talk to. It works better than taking other stuff!?!?!?

Where do you start!
I go to my normal Welsh Lesson in the Golden Lion in Coedpoeth and who is sitting there. No other than Les Barker, an enormous poetic and literary talent now living in Bwlchgwyn. Whilst not entertaining audiences worldwide, he wants to know more about being Welsh and our language and is interested in what is happening in Coedpoeth. I was amazed that since moving to Bwlchgwyn he has in a short time mastered a great deal of the Welsh language and is far more advanced than I am with my own language.
I will add some material that I have found on the internet to explain a little bit about what Les is about. I will try and add some links later.
( I am sure Les won't mind me saying that it is not the most up to date photo of him, but it was the only one I could find.)

Les Barker writes strange poems and comes from originally from Manchester, but he's now Welsh. He was an accountant before he became a professional idiot. He's written 76 books, which sell in large numbers at his gigs because people don't quite believe what they've just heard. His poems have spawned a number of folk heroes: Jason and the Arguments, Cosmo the Fairly Accurate Knife Thrower, Captain Indecisive and Spot of the Antarctic, to name but two.
Les began his career as assistant to Mrs Ackroyd, a small hairy mongrel who lay around in folk clubs, bit people and became famous. Mrs Ackroyd was the only dog ever to own her own record label. Since her sad demise, Les is mainly a solo performer, though he has taken to working with humans from time to time. The Mrs Ackroyd Band gradually evolved from an ever-changing who's who of the folk scene into a tightly knit, well-rehearsed group.
Les has several solo albums to his credit: 'Dogologues', An Infinite Number of Occasional Tables', 'A Cardi and Bloke', 'Up the creek without a poodle', 'Arovertherapy' and 'The War on Terrier'. He has travelled the length, breadth and height of Great Britain, as well as Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, and - both solo and with the band - the United States and Canada.
In addition there are five highly acclaimed albums of his serious work; the folk opera 'The Stones of Callanish', 'Some Love', 'The Wings of Butterflies', Airs of the Dog' and 'Twilight of the Dogs', all involving a galaxy of talent. His serious songs have also featured on albums by Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick, and by June Tabor. June invariably includes a smattering of Mr Barker's serious and comic songs in her live performances. The Kingston Trio and Tom Paxton have also recorded Mr Barker's songs'.
Les and the Mrs Ackroyd Band burst furtively onto national radio with a series of six programmes for BBC Radio 2 entitled 'Mrs Ackroyd explores up her roots'. A new, and much larger audience were led in ever decreasing circles by Mr Barker's strange mind. A growing number of radio programmes worldwide are featuring his recorded work. Dr Demento has included the Mrs Ackroyd Band's performance of 'Dachshunds with erections can't climb stairs' on one of his compilations, and 'Will the turtle be unbroken?' on another; and 'Reinstalling Windows' on the next one.

'The Mrs Ackroyd Occasional Table Book'; a collection of his greatest hits (up to about 1998) mixed with a selection of his photographs taken on his travels.

What else can one say about Les Barker? He was Old York Victoria's footballer of the year in the season when they finished top of the Altrincham League. He has run a marathon in two hours forty one minutes; but he was younger then. He's very difficult to describe. But there's only one of him. Go and see him (and buy some of his books).

Climate Change.

This could be very important. An international agreement has been reached on tackling climate change.
Developing nations will have to face targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions as well as rich countries.
The non-binding declaration is seen as vital in influencing a replacement for the Kyoto Protocol.
And it comes as researchers in the US revealed January was the hottest on record across the planet.
The agreement was reached after an informal meeting in Washington of the G8+5 Climate Change Dialogue - a discussion forum that is part of British-led environmental group Global Legislators Organisation for a Balanced Environment (Globe).

Globe was set up to encourage discussion of environmental issues between politicians and business leaders of the world's leading industrialised nations.

The announcement will be seen as a major coup for the British Government because the discussion forum was launched at the House of Commons in February 2006 and its president, Elliot Morley MP, is a special representative of the Prime Minister.
The forum's closing statement said man-made climate change was now 'beyond doubt'.

A statement from Globe said: 'Climate change is a global issue and there is an obligation on us all to take action, in line with our capabilities and historic responsibilities.'

The declaration is considered to indicate a real change in mood of the world's most powerful nations.
The two-day meeting brought together legislators from countries including the Group of Eight rich nations plus Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa.

Former cabinet minister Stephen Byers MP took part in the forum, joined by influential US senator Joe Lieberman and presidential candidate John McCain.

British businessman Sir Richard Branson, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Paul Wolfowitz, President of the World Bank, all gave keynote addresses.
